Louisiana Senate bans smoking in bars, casinos

A proposal that would ban smoking in bars and gambling facilities passed the Louisiana Senate on Thursday and is headed to the House.

The state already has a law that prohibits smoking in restaurants, public places, public buildings and most places of employment. The proposal by Sen. Rob Marionneaux, D-Livonia, would require bars, casinos, off-track betting facilities and other gambling spots also to become smoke-free.

The 22-10 vote by the Senate sent the bill to the House, where a similar bill by Rep. Gary Smith, D-Norco, awaits full House debate.

Pelosi to push China over North Korea talks
By Ian Swanson
Posted: 05/25/09 06:41 PM [ET]
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi later this week will press China¹s leaders to use their influence to bring North Korea back to negotiations on its nuclear program.
Pelosi (D-Calif.) said her delegation had always planned to press the Chinese on the issue, but North Korea¹s announcement Monday that it had successfully completed a nuclear test made the need more urgent.
"These reported tests underscore the message our congressional delegation planned to deliver to top Chinese government leaders during our meetings later this week: the Chinese must use their influence to help bring North Korea to the table for the Six-Party talks," Pelosi said in the statement.

IRS tax revenue falls along with taxpayers' income

For example, 6 million people lost jobs in the 12 months ended in April — and that means far fewer dollars from income taxes. Income tax revenue dropped 44% from a year ago.

Webmaster's Commentary:

The numbers do not work out. 6 million lost jobs do not account for a 44% decline in tax revenues. a 44% decline in tax revenues roughly equates to ALL working Americans having lost almost half of their earning ability.

As I mentioned before, the official unemployment figures do not tell the whole story. People who have lost high-paying jobs and been forced to take lower-paying jobs are still counted as employed, yet as the 44% reduction in tax revenues indicates, this is a significant loss of earning ability.

A 44% decline in tax revenues means that Americans are now earning 44% less money, thanks to a misguided tax policy that encouraged corporations to send high-paying American jobs to other countries.

There is always fresh evidence justifying the Israeli-Nazi analogy. In recent days and weeks, a number of Israeli officials and lawmakers proposed “draft laws” that would effectively formalize Israel’s de facto racism and seriously restrict the human and civil rights of Israel’s non-Jewish citizens.

One of the proposals being discussed would criminalize the commemoration of Nakba by Palestinians holding the Israeli citizenship. Predictably, the brazenly racist proposal has infuriated Israel’s 1.5-million- strong Palestinian community.

One Israeli Palestinian parliamentarian compared the proposed law with an imagined promulgation by Germany of a law banning all Jewish activities commemorating the holocaust.

Credit card “bill of rights” puts few restraints on banks

Last week the US Congress passed and President Obama signed into law the so-called Credit Card Holders’ Bill of Rights, legislation that has been touted by both the Congress and the Obama administration as a major reform of unfair practices by credit card issuers.

This legislation has been pushed through Congress amid growing outrage by middle class card holders over the increasingly arbitrary and usurious methods being used by credit card issuers to extract ever more money from a shrinking pool of card holders who are, at the same time, being battered by the economic crisis. The banks, which have suffered severe losses in other areas, such as the collapse of the mortgage bubble, have turned to their credit card business as a potential source of increased revenue.

The 10 Most Popular Conspiracy Theories

Reptilian humanoids control us? The Government carried out 9/11? Here are the 10 wackiest -- and most durable -- conspiracy theories.

I am surprised to see Alternet go along with this, but as this example shows, the usual tactic is to take serious areas of inquiry, such as 9-11, and blend them with UFOs, Elvis, and "Reptilians". That way the serious questions about 9-11 can be ignored without having to answer them.

However, there were no hidden ticking nuclear bombs. Hypothetical scenarios were used to justify torture for other purposes.

Mired in interminable conflict in Iraq and Afghanistan, the Bush administration is moving toward initiating two more wars, one with Iran and one with North Korea. With no US troops available, the Bush administration is revamping US war doctrine to allow for "preventative nuclear attack." In short, the Bush administration is planning to make the US the first country in history to initiate war with nuclear weapons. The Pentagon document, "Doctrine for Joint Nuclear Operations," calls for the use of nuclear weapons against non-nuclear adversaries in order "to ensure success of US and multinational operations."

Banks Aiming to Play Both Sides of Coin

Watch out! Here comes another proposed scheme designed to GIVE banks money. Since our government buys its own debt, it won't be much of a stretch for it to allow banks to buy their own toxic assets at inflated prices with government money. After all, the United States crossed the Rubicon months ago. Its debts cannot be repaid. If not for the Federal Reserve buying the debt, there would be no buyers.

Hyper-Inflation Ahead, Fed to Blame

John Hussman says the government has crowded out $1 trillion of private investment and virtually guaranteed double-digit inflation by insisting on bailing out bank bondholders to the tune of 100-cents on the dollar.

Obama’s Democratic Authoritarianism

He’s not closing Guantanamo, he’s continuing the "preventive detention" policy of the Bush administration under a new rubric ("prolonged detention"), he’s on board with military commissions ("reformed," of course) and the denial of habeas corpus – and last, but certainly not least, his supporters in Congress have launched a campaign to give him and his cabinet officials the power to close down the Internet in the name of "national security."

TRUTHS concerning the odious nature of IsraHELL

You see – when I hear this man speak and THEN listen to the sock-puppet two-faced piece of human crap imposter we have ‘elected ‘ as ‘THE CONSCIENCE OF THE NATION’ – who is IN FACT an avowed Communist (high treason) and dedicated child murderer (supports infanticide in it’s most hideous barbaric form) and an atheist (with no moral code) – it is a monumental embarrassment especially in light of the fact that our ‘obamanation’ in the eyes of God – has never served his country – as have I and many others who have ‘paid the dues’ of living in a free Republic.

Inside Iraq: Living with the enemy

He has worked with the Iraqi security forces identifying the members of the militia, operating with them on raids. And he has come face to face with some of his son's killers. And he asked them why.

"They said, 'We had orders to kill. For each person we killed they gave us $10,000,' " Abu Wissam says. "Their families are still defending them, saying our sons didn't do anything."

Burping of the lambs blows roast off menu

A government-sponsored study into greenhouse gases found that producing 2.2lb of lamb released the equivalent of 37lb of carbon dioxide.

The problem is because sheep burp so much methane, a potent greenhouse gas. Cows are only slightly better behaved. The production of 2.2lb of beef releases methane equivalent to 35lb of CO2.

That's nothing compared to me after I've eaten an "environmentally friendly" Beanfeast. Mr Methane would be jealous of my greenhouse emissions.

The Case for Taxing E-Mail

A tax on e-mail would stem the deluge of spam — and both free up and help pay for the bandwidth that the Internet needs to grow.

Webmaster's Commentary:

There are two problems with this.

You cannot find the spammers to tax them ...

Paying money to the government does not improve bandwidth because the ISPs that build the links are private companies.

There are things in our history that most Americans don’t know because they haven’t been told, or what they have been told is not true. Unfortunately, some of the things are so disturbing that many of us would prefer to keep it that way. Such is the case of the death of Frank Olson.

On Monday, November 23, 1953, Olson, a scientist at Fort Detrick, Maryland, told his boss he wanted to quit his job. The following Saturday Olson fell to his death from a tenth floor window of a hotel in New York City.

Nuremberg set a valid precedent for trials of war-crime suspects in Iraq's destruction

Japan Times: The Nuremberg Principles, a set of guidelines established after World War II to try Nazi Party members, were developed to determine what constitutes a war crime. The principles can also be applied today when considering the conditions that led to the Iraq war and, in the process, to the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people, many of them children, and to the devastation of a country's infrastructure.

In January 2003, a group of American law professors warned President George W. Bush that he and senior officials of his government could be prosecuted for war crimes if their military tactics violated international humanitarian law.

Perhaps one of the most serious breaches of international law by the Bush administration was the doctrine of "preventive war." In the case of the Iraq war, it was carried out without authorization from the U.N. Security Council in violation of the U.N. Charter, which forbids armed aggression and violations of any state's sovereignty except for immediate self-defense.

Steven Chu: White Roofs to Fight Global Warming

“There’s a friend of mine, a colleague of mine, Art Rosenfeld, who’s pushing very hard for a geo-engineering we all believe will be completely benign, and that’s when you have a flat-top roof building, make it white. “Now, you smile, but he’s done a calculation, and if you take all the buildings and make their roofs white and if you make the pavement more of a concrete type of colour rather than a black type of colour, and you do this uniformly . . . it’s the equivalent of reducing the carbon emissions due to all the cars on the road for 11 years.”

Webmaster's Commentary:

And how much carbon dioxide is put back into the atmosphere manufacturing, transporting, and applying all that white paint?

Springtime for Hitler?

by: Steve Weissman t r u t h o u t

(*And now it's ...
Springtime for Hitler and Germany
Deutschland is happy and gay!
We're marching to a faster pace
Look out, here comes the master race!)

Here, in France, we have a series of laws that make it a crime to deny the Holocaust. At most, the prosecutions make heroes of the Holocaust deniers to their small coterie of followers and do nothing to spread the truth of how Hitler tried to annihilate Jews,Roma and Sinti, and gays. So why lean on ineffective laws that only get in the way? Leave historical truth to historians and to playwrights, as the First Amendment compels Americans to do. Springtime for Hitler is a much more effective way to marginalize the purveyors of hate.

Canada's Soaring deficit undermines confidence in finance minister, say Liberals

Finance Minister Jim Flaherty has "lost credibility" after announcing Canada's deficit will soar to a record level, Liberal finance critic John McCallum said Wednesday.

Flaherty announced Tuesday the federal deficit will reach more than $50 billion this fiscal year, more than $16 billion higher in 2009-2010 than he forecast in January's budget.

McCallum, a former chief economist at Royal Bank, said he warned Flaherty early last year against spending "drunkenly" during good economic times.

"Sadly, I'm afraid this serves to further undermine confidence in our finance minister at a time when Canada desperately needs competence and strength at the helm in this area," said McCallum.

Americans' credit scores fall as they struggle to pay bills

From the third quarter of 2008 to the first quarter of 2009 — the latest data available — the average TransUnion credit score dropped 6 points to 651, the credit bureau says. Scores fell more dramatically in states hardest hit by the housing bust: California saw a 10-point drop, for example, and Arizona, 11.

"Consumers are feeling the bite of the current recession," says Ezra Becker, a director in TransUnion's financial services group. "With delinquencies showing up in credit files, it's not surprising that the average score is decreasing somewhat."

Webmaster's Commentary:

The government and Wall Street created this mess; how come their credit scores don't seem to be affected?
