Arrest of Alleged American Spy in Cuba Further Sets Back U.S.-Cuba Relations

The arrest of an American citizen in Cuba on Dec. 4 has dealt another blow to hopes that Cuba and the U.S. could normalize diplomatic relations. The unnamed American was arrested at José Marti International Airport as he tried to board a U.S. –bound flight. Cuban officials say the man has been detained on allegations of espionage, an accusation strongly refuted by U.S. officials. Nevertheless, this latest episodes gives credence to the notion that U.S.-Cuban relations have taken a turn for the worse, and even the most sanguine of optimists agree that the window of opportunity created by the election of Barack Obama is quickly slamming shut...

Webmaster's Commentary:

This feels a lot like the all-too-convenient crash of Francis Gary Powers' U-2 over Russia, which ended Kennedy's attempt to end the cold war in 1960, a move which had it succeeded, would have meant the loss of trillions of taxpayer dollars to the Pentagon and Defense contractors.

Cuba is Missing...From US Reports on the International Response to Haiti’s Earthquake

As for the rest of the US media, they have simply ignored Cuba.

In fact, left unmentioned is the reality that Cuba already had over 400 doctors posted to Haiti to help with the day-to-day health needs of this poorest nation in the Americas, and that those doctors were the first to respond to the disaster, setting up a hospital right next to the main hospital in Port-au-Prince which collapsed in the earthquake.

Far from “doing nothing” about the disaster as the right-wing propagandists at Fox-TV were claiming, Cuba has been one of the most effective and critical responders to the crisis, because it had set up a medical infrastructure before the quake, which was able to mobilize quickly and start treating the victims.

CIA Agent Captured in Cuba

An article published in the December 12th edition of the New York Times revealed the detention of a US government contract employee in Havana this past December 5th. The employee, whose name has not yet been disclosed, works for Development Alternatives, Inc. (DAI), one of the largest US government contractors providing services to the State Department, the Pentagon and the US Agency for International Development (USAID). The employee was detained while distributing cellular telephones, computers and other communications equipment to Cuban dissident and counterrevolutionary groups that work to promote the US agenda on the Caribbean island.

Chavez says Clinton threatens Venezuela over ties with Iran

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez said a recent statement by the U.S. secretary of state on ties with Iran was “a clear threat” against his country and Bolivia, the EFE news agency said on Monday.

Hillary Clinton said on Monday that “if people want to flirt with Iran, they should take a look at what the consequences might well be for them.” She expressed hope that they would “think twice” before doing so.

“Clinton’s statements are, above all a threat to Bolivia and Venezuela, as well as the whole Bolivarian Alliance,” the agency quoted the Venezuelan leader as saying at a summit of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of our America (ALBA)...

As we remember and reflect upon the gratitude we feel for the wonder that is in our lives, and the people whose talent, love, and inspiration guides us, this is for Mike Rivero, a true American hero and a beacon for the world.

New JFK assassination bombshells

The updated trade paperback's new information completes the story of how the top secret plan of John and Robert Kennedy to stage a coup against Fidel Castro on December 1, 1963 -- with the help of Cuban Army Commander Juan Almeida -- was used by three powerful Mafia bosses to murder JFK.

Documented from the National Archives for the first time is Watergate burglar Bernard Barker's decades-long work for the Mafia, even as Barker aided the CIA with the coup plan. This let Barker sell out the coup plan to his mob bosses and help to assassinate JFK in a way that forced top US officials to withhold key information from the Warren Commission and the press, to prevent a nuclear confrontation with Russia.

This legacy of secrecy also allowed two men who confessed their roles in JFK's murder to be involved in the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, in 1968. The trade paperback also contains important new information about the FBI informant who obtained the JFK assassination confession of godfather Carlos Marcello, which the Bureau kept secret for twenty years.

UNCLASSIFIED: US Military Plan to Justify Intervention in Cuba, 1962.

JOINT CHIEFS OF STAFF
MEMORANDUM FOR THE SECRETARY OF DEFENSE
13 March 1962

....A "Remember the Maine" incident could be arranged in several forms....

...We could sink a boatload of Cubans en route to Florida (real or simulated). We could foster attempts on lives of Cuban refugees in the United States even to the extent of wounding in instances to be widely publicized. Exploding a few plastic bombs in carefully chosen spots, the arrest of Cuban agents and the release of prepared documents substantiating Cuban involvement, also would be helpful in projecting the idea of an irresponsible government....

What Henry Kissenger and the FBI knew about Cubana Flight 455 Bombing

On October 6, 1976, anti-Castro terrorists murdered seventy-three people on Cubana Flight 455 off Barbados.

Declassified letters and reports (like below from FBI Director Clarence M. Kelley to Henry Kissenger) show that the United States Government knew of the plot beforehand and not only that: they knew exactly who was involved almost four months before the bombing.

For over three decades the US government has protected the terrorists. This outrage continues under the Obama Administration and undermines whatever moral authority the United States retains in the persecution of its war in Iraq – a “part-time hobby” war with no end in sight.

Russia to drill for oil off Cuba

Russia is to begin oil exploration in the Gulf of Mexico, after signing a deal with Cuba, says Cuban state media.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Had it not been for a consistently, stupidly short-sighted and vindictive US embargo against Cuba, it could have been the US making a deal for this oil, rather than Russia.

We've somehow managed to find what interests we have in common with Russia and China (and began normalizing our relationship with Vietnam as of 2007). Why has there been such a consistent resistance on the part of Congress to normalize our relationship with Cuba?

Russia and China have been making deals to get the energy supplies they need; we've been shooting bullets and dropping bombs to attempt to get ours, which hasn't been working out very well, frankly.

What's wrong with this picture?!? EVERYTHING!!

Microsoft Versus Chavez

Yesterday, Microsoft MSN (Spain) featured a montage photo of Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez and the ex president of Cuba, Fidel Castro, wearing king's crowns, accompanied by the colourful title, "When power corrupts: Striving to be kings." The Venezuelan government and a grassroots technology movement here are both promoting the use and creation of open source (free) software, so it's no surprise that software tyrant, Microsoft, is lambasting Chavez.

Miami continues to have a strong nucleus of right extremists from various Latin American countries, who consider this city and the United States as a sanctuary for their activities, given that hundreds of fugitives, presidents and henchmen of dictatorial regimes have found a safe refuge there over the years.

An Impressive Gesture. Fidel Reflects on John .F. Kennedy and Robert F. Kennedy

"I confess that many times I have meditated on the dramatic story of John F. Kennedy. It was my fate to live through the era when he was the greatest and most dangerous adversary of the Revolution. It was something that didn’t play a part in his calculations. He saw himself as the representative of a new generation of Americans who were confronting the old-style, dirty politics of men of the sort of Nixon whom he had defeated with a tremendous display of political talent."

FLASHBACK - Castro Blames the C.I.A. For an Epidemic in Cuba

President Fidel Castro said tonight that he shared the profound suspicion of many Cubans that a series of disastrous crop blights and the current epidemic of dengue fever, which has killed 113 people, including 81 children, were deliberately introduced into Cuba by the Central Intelligence Agency.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Back in 1981, we dismissed such claims as the ravings of "The Enemy."

But today, in the post "Saddam's nooks" age and amid revelations of the institutionalized use of torture by the US government, it may be that we were a bit too hasty in our prejudices.

Why the US still hates Cuba

At the centre of the Summit of the Americas held in Trinidad and Tobago over April 17-19, was the only country from the hemisphere not present — Cuba.

Speaking at the opening session, Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega noted that while a large majority of the heads of states of the Americas were present, “there are two major absentees”.

The first was “Cuba, whose crime has been to fight for its independence, for the sovereignty of the peoples; lending solidarity, without conditions, to our peoples, and for that it is being sanctioned, for that it is being punished, for that it is being excluded.”

The second was the nation of Puerto Rico, which continues to be an official colony of the United States — denied independence.

CIA Link to Cuban Pig Virus Reported

With at least the tacit backing of U.S. Central Intelligence Agency officials, operatives linked to anti-Castro terrorists introduced African swine fever virus into Cuba in 1971.
Six weeks later an outbreak of the disease forced the slaughter of 500,000 pigs to prevent a nationwide animal epidemic.
A U.S. intelligence source told Newsday last week he was given the virus in a sealed, unmarked container at a U.S. Army base and CIA training ground in the Panama Canal Zone, with instructions to turn it over to the anti-Castro group.

It's past time for a thaw with Cuba

lmost half a century ago, at the height of the Cold War, President Eisenhower declared the United States insulted by the disputatious attitude of Fidel Castro's Cuba, and ordered a limited embargo of the island nation. Eisenhower's advisers assured him that the pain of the measure would soon bring Castro to his political knees. Over the years since then – during which the Cold War spectacularly ended – an abortive invasion by United States-armed fighters has failed; the embargo has been successively tightened; the Cuban exiles in Florida who could once deliver that state's votes to a friendly presidential candidate are dying off; citizens of the Land of the Free are not free to travel to Cuba; and El Caballo has become a feeble and ill, but defiant, old man.

THE SIEGE OF GAZA IS FAR FROM OVER

There has been talk in the Western Press the past week of President Obama’s intention to keep the embargo on Cuba. There has been no talk of the continuing embargo on the Gaza Strip. America is as much responsible for that embargo as the one on Cuba.

Webmaster's Commentary:

(ahem)

Cuba has survived 47 years of the US embargo. If embargo was going to work, it would have done so by now. All continuing the embargo does is make the United States look petty, vindictive, and mean, not to mention afraid of a tiny Caribbean island.

Christian Science Monitor | Feb 17, 2009 | Sara Miller Llana

Caracas, Venezuela - With a clear popular victory Sunday in his bid to end term limits, Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez has injected new vigor into his controversial "21st-century socialism" movement and secured his role at a time when the economy is starting to falter.

"He is going to take advantage of this moment, saying the people voted for socialism," says Ricardo Sucre, a political analyst in Caracas. "He is going to say this gives him the authorization to take more power and advance his project."

Guantanamo Case Files in Disarray

President Obama's plans to expeditiously determine the fates of about 245 terrorism suspects held at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and quickly close the military prison there were set back last week when incoming legal and national security officials -- barred until the inauguration from examining classified material on the detainees -- discovered that there were no comprehensive case files on many of them.
