The US Expresses Concern About The New Russian Cruise Missiles

The commander of the United States Northern Command And North American Aerospace Defense Command, General Lori Robinson spoke to the United States Senate Armed Services Committee about her "concern" over the potential of the newly developed Russian cruise missiles. The text and video of her speech are published on the website of the Committee.

Speaking about possible events that may affect the mission of US defense, the general noted that Russia and China "have expanded their military presence." Where it happened, Robinson did not clarify, noting that Russia has prioritized the development of "advanced cruise missiles capable of acquiring targets from distances not previously seen."

Is ‘Putin Regime’ The ‘Evil Empire’ Of Today?

One of Ronald Reagan’s greatest contributions to the overthrow of communism and the disintegration of the Soviet Union was his identification of the USSR as “the evil empire,” a term that outraged Moscow but inspired many within its borders and prompted those beyond its borders to talk about decolonization as something inevitable.

Now, Nikki Haley, the US permanent representative to the United States, has introduced a term that has outraged Russian officialdom every bit as much Reagan’s words did. She has referred the government in Moscow as “Putin’s regime,” a turn of phrase that lumps it together with those of Kim in North Korea and Asad in Syria.

Russia’s permanent representative to the UN, Vasily Nebemzya was outraged.>>>

You would have thought armed conflict with Russia would be a bigger story

The relative lack of attention being paid to the news that U.S.-backed forces killed 200 to 300 Russian mercenary soldiers this month in Syria seems like a non-barking dog to me.

In many years, this might have been the most disruptive story, holding the headlines for weeks or maybe months. Circa February 2018, it didn’t command a single major news cycle.

What outsiders know about the event is still fragmentary, but it sounds pretty ominous. One Bloomberg account notes: “More than 200 contract soldiers, mostly Russians fighting on behalf of Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad, died in a failed attack on a base held by U.S. and mainly Kurdish forces in the oil-rich Deir Ezzor region.” It is described as the biggest clash between U.S. and Russian forces since the Cold War.>>>

The Trump Administration Wants a War America Cannot Win

Who knew that U.S. vice president Mike Pence would take a page out of activist athlete Colin Kaepernick’s playbook and refuse to stand for the host team’s entry at the Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony on Feb. 8, 2018?

The games were being held in PyeongChang, Korea — and the team was composed of athletes representing what most people on the peninsula imagine to be their country, if only in their hopes and dreams — one nation, united North and South.

Now that the DPRK has entered the nine nation nuclear weapons club and mastered the missile technology necessary to deliver those weapons to the United States, what chance is there of such a final victory for the United States on the peninsula? Increasingly the most aggressive voices in the U.S. military policy establishment are pushing for a shift to offense against the DPRK, and since the election of Donald Trump, these voices are ascendant.

These voices are dangerous and wrong, and conscientious>>>

Operation Mockingbird

Operation Mockingbird is a CIA project to subvert the original mission of the news media, to control corporate media for its own purposes.

Origins
Operation Mockingbird began in 1950, organized by Allen Dulles and Cord Meyer.[1] The CIA spent today's equivalent of one billion dollars a year hiring journalists from Corporate Media including CBS, The New York Times, ABC, NBC, Newsweek, Associated Press and others, to promote their point of view. The original operation reportedly involved some 3,000 CIA operatives and hired over 400 journalists. [2]

FLASHBACK: US Govt Just Legalized Operation Mockingbird — FBI Can Now Impersonate the Media

Bad cases make bad law.

FBI agents conducting undercover investigations have now been given the green light to impersonate journalists, the Justice Department determined last week — effectively legalizing the government’s most notorious propaganda program, Operation Mockingbird.

Last Thursday, the Department of Justice Office of Inspector General published what’s become the subject of outrage for journalists, civil and constitutional rights advocates, and legal experts — “A Review of the FBI’s Impersonation of a Journalist in a Criminal Investigation.”

Navy sends destroyers to Black Sea to ‘desensitize’ Russia

The Navy has deployed the guided-missile destroyer Carney to join the destroyer Ross in the Black Sea in a move that U.S. military officials told CNN is intended to “desensitize” Russia to the presence of American military assets in the strategically important region.

The deployment of the Carney marks the first time in four years that two American destroyers have operated in the Black Sea outside of scheduled exercises. The move comes as Russia continues to militarize Crimea, the peninsula it seized from Ukraine in 2014.

In recent years, the U.S. and NATO have accused Russia of sending troops and military hardware to Crimea, and there are now reports that submarines have been added to the mix.

Nevertheless, U.S. and NATO officials have insisted that they are not playing tit-for-tat with the Russians.

War Crimes in America

The US military has killed, maimed and made homeless well over 20,000,000 people since the Vietnam War.

Let's bring the Vietnam War home...

Enough dead bodies to line up, head placed to feet, around the perimeter of Louisiana.[2]

Meanwhile all of New York City, and Chicago are refugeed.

Three Atlantas are filled with war orphans.

And 317 elementary schools are filled with children deformed from Agent Orange, unexploded cluster bombs, and landmines.

Washington Delivers New Ultimatum on Iran

The US State Department has issued a fresh ultimatum on the Iran nuclear deal to Washington’s ostensible major allies in Europe, demanding that Germany, Britain and France commit themselves to altering the agreement along the lines demanded by President Donald Trump or face its unilateral abrogation by the US.

A secret State Department cable obtained by Reuters presents what are essentially the same demands made by Trump last January. At that time, he announced that he was prepared to relaunch all-out US economic warfare against Iran unless the European powers joined Washington in imposing a rewritten nuclear accord on Tehran, including provisions that the Iranian government cannot and will not accept.

No doubt they are working hard to solve this urgent problem. If they can’t find a “justification” (which they can’t), they will have to create one (which they will). Or perhaps they will find what they have already created. Whatever the solution, we should feel confident that they are not sitting on their hands. Kushner Pushes Back Against Kelly As Top White House Staffers Battle For Political Survival

As speculation mounted earlier this month that Chief of Staff John Kelly might soon be shown the door following the Feb. 6 revelation that White House Staff Secretary Rob Porter's ex-wives exposed him as a domestic abuser, we anticipated that Kelly's exit might be fraught with complications for one important reason: Many of top White House officials - most notably senior advisor Jared Kushner - are still working with the same type of temporary security clearance that Porter had.

Kelly's equivocating over when, exactly, he learned about Porter's sordid history drew attention to this uncomfortable fact, and we anticipated that, once the White House made clear it would stand by its man, the simmering tensions between Kelly and Kushner, whom Kelly has long treated with quiet derision, would soon spill over into public view.

Risking Major Escalation, Trump Weighs Killing Of Russian Fighters In Syria As Sign Of "Tough Stance" Toward Putin

In the aftermath of Robert Mueller's indictment against 13 Russian "operatives" for meddling with the US presidential election, President Trump has been under fire for lashing out at everyone... except Russia. So, in response, Bloomberg reports that the Trump administration is weighing citing the deaths of more than 200 Russian fighters - or rather mercenaries - in Syria, who were killed following US strikes on February 7, as an example of Trump's tough stance toward Russia.

Recall that last week, "more than 200 mercenaries, mostly Russians fighting on behalf of Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad, died in a failed attack on a base and refinery held by U.S. and U.S.-backed forces in the oil-rich Deir Ezzor region" In terms of total body count, the U.S. official put the death toll at about 100, with 200 to 300 injured; while Russia admitted that Russians were killed, it said the number was five and denied that the men killed were officially sanctioned Russian troops.

Escalation in Syria – How Far Can the Russians be Pushed? - The Saker

A new US strategy in Syria: to punish the Russians as much as possible short of an overt US attack on Russian forces.

Events in Syria have recently clearly taken a turn for the worse and there is an increasing amount of evidence that the Russian task force in Syria is being targeted by a systematic campaign of “harassing attacks”.

First, there was the (relatively successful) drone and mortar attack on the Russian Aerospace base in Khmeimin. Then there was the shooting down of a Russian SU-25 over the city of Maasran in the Idlib province. Now we hear of Russian casualties in the US raid on a Syrian column (along with widely exaggerated claims of “hundreds” of killed Russians).

The US is Executing a Global War Plan

Washington is moving inevitably on a global war plan. That’s the grim conclusion one has to draw from three unfolding war scenarios.

Ultimately, it’s about American imperialism trying to assert hegemony over the international order for the benefit of US capitalism. Russia and China are prime targets for this global assault.

The three unfolding war scenarios are seen in Syria, North Korea and Ukraine. These are not disparate, disassociated conflicts. They are inter-related expressions of the American war plans. War plans which involve the moving of strategic military power into position.

Admiral warns US must prepare for possibility of war with China

The navy admiral nominated to be the next US ambassador to Australia has told Congress America must prepare for the possibility of war with China, and said it would rely on Australia to help uphold the international rules-based system in the Asia-Pacific.

In an excoriating assessment of China’s increasingly muscular posture in the region, Harry Harris said Beijing’s “intent is crystal clear” to dominate the South China Sea and that its military might could soon rival American power “across almost every domain”.

Harris, soon to retire as the head of US Pacific Command in Hawaii, told the House armed services committee, the US and its allies should be wary of Beijing’s military expansionism in the region, and condemned China’s foreign influence operations, predatory economic behaviour and coercion of regional neighbours.

“China’s intent is crystal clear. We ignore it at our peril,” he said. “I’m concerned China will now work to undermine the international rules-based order.”

Russians Spooked by Nukes-Against-Cyber-Attack Policy

Moscow is showing understandable concern over the lowering of the threshold for employing nuclear weapons to include retaliation for cyber-attacks, a change announced on Feb. 2 in the U.S. Nuclear Posture Review (NPR).

US doctrine on first-use, the NPR cites the efforts of potential adversaries “to design and use cyber weapons” and explains the change as a “hedge” against non-nuclear threats. In response, Russia described the move as an “attempt to shift onto others one’s own responsibility” for the deteriorating security situation.

For the next two years, at least, the American public should be spared the U.S. Defense Department’s wailing about “readiness.” After seven years of teeth-gnashing and garment-rending, the military is finally getting what it wants: more money than ever.

The Donald Trump administration’s defense budget request for fiscal year 2019 is out, less than a week after Congress cut an overall deal on spending levels for 2018 and 2019. Unlike the domestic spending part of the administration’s budget request, the defense numbers aren’t dead on arrival — in fact, the military can count on getting every cent. The congressional deal set new levels for defense, agreeing to $700 billion for national defense in 2018 and $716 billion in 2019. That’s nearly $165 billion more than the military had anticipated prior to this year. The United States is back to defense spending, in constant dollars, that is higher than the peak spending levels under Ronald Reagan. Only in 2010, at the height of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, was defense spending higher.

It’s worth thinking about why defense spending is about to explode. It’s not because of some revolutionary change in the global security environment>>>

The military, recognizing that the balance of power has shifted, seizes the prime minister, who will live the rest of his life under house arrest. Americans like to think of their country as different from those run by military regimes. They are only fooling themselves. Ever since the federal government was converted into a national-security state after World War II (without a constitutional amendment authorizing the conversion), it has been the Pentagon, the CIA, and the NSA that have run the government, just like in countries governed by military dictatorships.

National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster said on Saturday that, despite denials, public reports showed that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad was using chemical weapons, and added that it was time for the international community to hold the Syrian government to account.

400 dead Russians and Syrians, yet no one knows who ordered them to attack US forces in Syria

The United States is still unsure who directed a February 7 attack on US and US-backed forces in Syria, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said on Saturday, even as he acknowledged accounts that Russian civilian contractors were involved.
***
The US has estimated about 100 pro-Syrian government forces were killed by US strikes to repel the Febuary 7 attack.

Russian military officers told the United States during the incident that Moscow was not involved. The Pentagon has declined to comment on the exact makeup of the attacking forces and Mattis appeared at a loss to explain the incident 10 days later.

“I still cannot give you any more information on why they would do this. But they took direction from someone,” Mattis told reporters >>>

Time for Turkey to return to the West

***
These contacts could ultimately result in an improvement in Turkey’s relations with the European Union as a whole. Within that framework, the Feb. 14-15 visit to Turkey by Council of Europe Secretary General Thorbjorn Jagland was also probably important.

It is same for relations with the U.S., only much more complicated. Çavu?o?lu had said in advance of Tillerson’s visit that relations between the two countries could either get better or worse but not stay the same. Following a three-hour-plus meeting between Erdo?an, Tillerson and Çavu?o?lu on the evening of Feb. 15 - and a near two-hour meeting between Tillerson and Çavu?o?lu with their delegations on the morning of Feb. 16 - the joint declaration and joint press conference showed that Ankara-Washington ties are at least not going to get worse for the time
being.
***
But the main focus of the Tillerson visit was the Turkish-U.S. rift in Syria. It was interesting to see Tillerson saying the status of the town of Manbij was a priority, as Çavu?o?lu said Turkey wanted the U.S. to keep its promises and remove the People’s Protection Units (YPG) from Manbij to the east of Euphrates as a precondition for coordinating actions in Syria.

George W. Bush doesn't deserve the media's efforts at rehabilitation

“Our democracy is only as good as people trust the results,” former President George W. Bush declared in a presumably well-paid speech last week in the United Arab Emirates, a notorious Arab dictatorship. Bush is being exalted as if he is the second coming of George Washington thanks to his implied slams against the Trump administration. But Bush’s actions during his eight year reign did far more to ravage democracy at home and abroad than most people realize.

Thanks to gushing media coverage, Bush is enjoying one of the greatest comebacks in modern American history. In the summer of 2008, only 22 percent of Americans approved of Bush and 41 percent said he was the "worst president ever." Last month, a poll showed that 61 percent of Americans now approve of Bush, and his support among Democrats quintupled, from 11 percent in early 2009 to 54 percent now. If Americans want to understand current political challenges, they need to recall Bush’s forgotten debacles.

Webmaster's Commentary:

A couple of weeks ago, I believe on Faux news, I was watching a very vaccuous interview of the Bush twins, Barbara and Jenna, who apparently have (ghost) written a book on what their years growing up in a highly political family were like, titled "Sisters First."

Were I the television interviewer (something which will never happen, so the Bush family can collectively breathe more easily), my first question would have been "How does it feel, being the daughters of a war criminal"?!?

The screen would have gone blank, with a banner reading "Technical Difficulties", and I would have been dragged off the set, and thrown out the door of the studio in complete ignominy.

But would it have been worth it?!? HELL, YES!! :-)

This country needs to never forget, that under the Bush era, this democratic republic moved from "The Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave" to "The land of the surveilled and the home of the cowed."

Sad Old Men Will Attack Russia at the Munich 'Security' Conference

The annual Munich Security Conference (MSC) will take place on February 16-18. No doubt the participants will paint Russia as a bully who is responsible for each and every thing that is going wrong, while the “innocent” West is calling for restraint and is ready to go to any length to preserve peace on earth.

The West is innocent? Russia is a bully and a threat? This is the right time to look at recent events to see what’s really happening. The US 2019 draft budget released on Feb. 12 asks Congress to approve over $6.3 billion for the US-led NATO European Reassurance Initiative (ERI). In other words, this money is to be spent on a military build-up near Russia’s borders.

Tillerson's Visit to Ankara Seen as Green Light to Turkey's Chemical Attack against Kurds

***
The attack was launched by the FSA militants who are backed by Ankara and at the end of Rex Tillerson's visit to Turkey, raising speculations that the attack was launched after a US green light.

Washington's silence on the attack that has reinvigorated speculations about its suspicious role in the incident comes as it has repeatedly accused the Syrian army forces of conducting chemical weapons against militants, a claim always rejected by Damascus.

Experts believe the US selective approach is yet another indicator of Washington's willingness to make an instrumental use of chemical warfare.

Moscow Never 'Bet' on US Election

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Russia was never a "hostage" to expectations of Donald Trump's presidency in the United States, suggestions that Moscow bet on him at the 2016 election and lost are speculation.

"I would not say that we were hostage to some expectations. There is much speculation at the moment on the issue of Russia ‘betting’ on Trump and losing," Lavrov told Euronews, Sputnik reported.

The Minister added that a number of Russian politicians and activists had indeed made statements in support of Trump's presidency, however the country's leadership had never placed any stake on any candidates.

Jim Jatras, political analyst and former US diplomat instead believes that the indictment is just an attempt to keep Americans from questioning the behavior of their government.

"Over the past few weeks we have seen so much about how the Justice Department, the FBI, the State Department and the CIA have been mixed up — by the way I would include MI6 and Government Communications Headquarters as being involved in this — [in] trying to subvert the rule of law… this is an attempt to come back and say ‘Never mind all this, look at that">>>

Sanctions' Thirst: US Politicians Call for Response Over Alleged Vote Meddling

The US Justice Department filed charges against more than a dozen Russian persons and entities for trying to influence the 2016 US presidential contest which prompted cries for more sanctions on Moscow and demands for better election security.

The defendants intentionally conspired with each other to defraud the United States by undermining the democratic process in the country, the court document added.
The Russian individuals engaged in organizing rallies and paid Americans to participate in political activities and promote campaigns. The defendants communicated with members of Trump's campaign who were unaware of their motives, according to the indictment.
