ISRAELIS INVEST IN NEW ARTILLERY: ATMOS MOBILE HOWITZER

SOURCE: BREAKINGDEFENSE.COM

TEL AVIV: The Israeli government just awarded the initial, $125 million contract of a planned 12-year, $280 million program to replace its tank-like M109 howitzers with Elbit’s wheeled ATMOS. About half the work will be done by Elbit’s subsidiaries and partners in the United States, a sign of how Israeli defense spending has shifted since Washington restricted its ally’s ability to spend US aid on non-US products.

The investment also shows how good old-fashioned 155 mm shells still play a vital role in a Mideast roiled by Hezbollah rockets and Iranian missile tests. Even in an age of smart weapons, when you need to bombard a target, it turns out that quantity still has a quality of its own.

“Smart rockets and missiles are an excellent way of hitting enemy targets, but when the infantry has to force the enemy to retreat from a site, it needs the firepower of the artillery — which is relatively cheap compared with the new smart weapons,” one former commander of the IDF artillery corps told Breaking Defense. “Artillery is the best way of creating a smoke curtain around an enemy stronghold and keeping the enemy in the trenches by constant fire. Using smart weapons for these missions would cost huge sums of money.”

Webmaster's Commentary:

But I have to wonder; against which nation-state in the Middle East is Israel thinking about using this weapon?!?

And to my Israeli brothers and sisters, I have a thought; like the US government, I think that Israel needs to add another position, ranked at cabinet level, and right the heck now.

That would be an Israeli Department of Peace, tasked with keeping things peaceful between Israel and her neighbors. And please, don't laugh here; the Israeli government has kept its people in a constant state of fear about attacks by your neighbors for decades; I get that.

But do you think, for example, that Iran wouldn't love to sign a peace treaty with Israel, if Netanyahu had the courage and horse-sense, to do just that?!?
The Jewish community is thriving in Iran, and doing incredibly well.

There are two things, which I think, should unite both younger Israelis and Iranians; they both love their kids, and want the best for them.

So please tell me, at what point does a reasonable, win/win peace treaty, arrived at by moral, hard won negotiations, trump war?!?

In my world, the answer is, always.

We have three wonderful grand nephews, one wonderful nephew, and one wonderful grand niece.

I want these kids to grow up in a time of unprecedented peace, the intelligent sharing of information, and protection against life's quirks, and problems; and I think, were I to ask young Israeli and Iranian moms and dads, they would want the same for their kids.

Peace, on this planet, is not impossible; but it has to be valued by all people on this planet; but unfortunately, war is almost always more profitable, which makes it "justifiable" by the people who build the weaons, and reap the profits.
