Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat has gone on the offensive against the municipal legal system, state prosecutor and outgoing Attorney General Menachem Mazuz following Mazuz’s order to the police to immediately evict the Jews living in a building in East Jerusalem’s predominantly Arab Silwan neighborhood.

Mazuz’s order, which follows a court decision, came in a letter directing Police Commissioner David Cohen to evacuate the residents of Beit Yonatan, but Jerusalem city manager Yair Ma’ayan has announced that the municipality does not intend to have the order enforced.

As an Irishman, I will start my post today with a quote from Bobby Sands about our own struggle for freedom and justice as it also applies to Palestine:

“Everyone, Republican or otherwise, has their own particular part to play. No part is too great or too small; no one is too old or too young to do something.”

Since our return from Gaza, I had great plans of writing many posts, covering each incident and event in an orderly fashion. But each time I sat down to write I had problems. I was trying to write in order of events, covering one subject in each post, then moving on to the next event. This went on for two days as those who have been waiting to read of our trip can attest.

Joel Kovel Fired From Bard College For Opposing Zionism

In January, 1988, I was appointed to the Alger Hiss Chair of Social Studies at Bard College. As this was a Presidential appointment outside the tenure system, I have served under a series of contracts. The last of these was half-time (one semester on, one off, with half salary and full benefits year-round), effective from July 1, 2004, to June 30, 2009. On February 7 I received a letter from Michèle Dominy, Dean of the College, informing me that my contract would not be renewed this July 1 and that I would be moved to emeritus status as of that day. She wrote that this decision was made by President Botstein, Executive Vice-President Papadimitriou and herself, in consultation with members of the Faculty Senate.

25 State Unemployment Funds Bankrupt; Credit Card Defaults at Record Levels; Look on the Bright Side

The unemployment insurance system is in crisis. A record 20 million Americans collected unemployment benefits last year, and so far 25 states have run out of funds and been forced to borrow from the federal government, raise taxes or cut benefits. Using near real-time data on states' revenues and the benefits they pay out, we've estimated how long their trust funds will hold up.

And while states’ poor fiscal planning is a serious topic on its own, our unemployment insurance tracker also follows the increasing human toll: so far businesses in 36 states face tax increases this year, ranging from a few dollars per worker to more than a thousand. Six states have moved to cut, freeze or otherwise restrict benefits, a number that is likely to increase.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Times are good? Raise taxes.

Times are bad? Raise taxes.

... and cut benefits.

Vancouver cops apologize for bashing innocent man

Officers were called to the southeast Vancouver house at 2 a.m. after a woman called 911 to report that her drunken husband had struck her in the back of the head and she was concerned for her baby’s safety.

Unfortunately, the officers didn’t realize there were two suites in the home and the complainant was actually Wu’s tenant, who lives in a ground-floor suite.

“The cops didn’t ask clearly — not even ID me or anything — before they started beating me,” Wu said through a translator to the Ming Pao newspaper.

“I think they have an attitude problem.”

US: Democrats agree on commission to cut Social Security, Medicare

Fourteen votes would be required to adopt any recommendation, meaning that at least half the Republicans would have to agree. Film director Roman Polanski's wife has said she "understands perfectly" that women were shocked by the under-age sex case revived by her husband's arrest in Switzerland for possible extradition to the US.

But she said that in the 1970s, when the crime took place, society viewed sex and drugs in a different light.

Webmaster's Commentary:

You know, I was a horny young guy in the 1970s, and I recall vividly that even back then, sex with a 13-year old girl, drugged or not, was a tacky no-no!

I think that all those Hollywood celebrities who are clamoring to defend Polanski fail to understand that they are doing themselves and the entertainment industry grave harm by defending the indefensible. They are perpetuating the image of Hollywood celebrities as "I can do anything I want because I am rich and beautiful and powerful" perverts.

And that comes across as a bit hypocritical in an era where the RIAA and MPAA are portraying file copiers as immoral monsters.

Supreme Court: Corporations may spend freely on elections

The Supreme Court threw out a 63-year-old law designed to restrain the influence of big business and unions on elections Thursday, ruling that corporations may spend as freely as they like to support or oppose candidates for president and Congress. The decision could drastically alter who gives and gets hundreds of millions of dollars in this year's crucial midterm elections.

CARIBIC - The flying observing system

The project CARIBIC (Civil Aircraft for the Regular Investigation of the Atmosphere Based on an Instrument Container) deploys a measurement container onboard a Lufthansa passenger aircraft (Airbus A340-600), see a picture of the inlet. The container accommodates 15 fully automated instruments for measurements of aerosols and various trace gases. In addition to in-situ measurements, whole air samples are collected in glass flasks during the CARIBIC flights at roughly one hour intervals with sampling times between 30 and 120 seconds. The samples are analysed for greenhouse gases as well as for organic compounds and isotopes by a number of European laboratories.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Very clever system of using existing commercial aircraft for high altitude sampling.

What is obvious from the results is that green plants can and will absorb carbon dioxide. Which is why this "Wood chip bio-fuel" system (a fancy name for chopping down trees and burning them) is the wrong direction to go.

We need to leave trees alive (Christmas or otherwise) to get rid of the CO2 and we don't need Saint Al of the Gore to do it.

Millions Against Monsanto Campaign

Percy Schmeiser is a farmer from Saskatchewan Canada, whose Canola fields were contaminated with Monsanto's genetically engineered Round-Up Ready Canola by pollen from a nearby farm. Monsanto says it doesn't matter how the contamination took place, and is therefore demanding Schmeiser pay their Technology Fee (the fee farmers must pay to grow Monsanto's genetically engineered products). According to Schmeiser, "I never had anything to do with Monsanto, outside of buying chemicals. I never signed a contract.

If I would go to St. Louis (Monsanto Headquarters) and contaminate their plots - destroy what they have worked on for 40 years - I think I would be put in jail and the key thrown away."

Webmaster's Commentary:

We have seen companies like Monsanto actually take farms away from their owners for "Patent Infringement" because wind and insects carried pollen from GM crops onto the farmer's fields without his knowledge and permission.

At present such abusive lawsuits have been stopped and Monsanto is "settling" for extorting a technology fee from farmers whose lands are contaminated by Monsanto's products.

With yesterday's US Supreme Court decision, companies like Monsanto are free to spend however much money they want to to put legislators in place who will support this land theft policy, and block and and all efforts to independently analyze the safety of GM technology or to label food products that have GM content.

Remember, as of now, the available scientific evidence coming from Europe is that GM crops produce lower crop yields, create toxic organ failure in animals fed on the crops, and that the pests and weeds the designer genes are intended to block are already evolving to adapt to the GM crops. In other words, GM is now all downside and no upside.

GM is just the latest scam form the same political-science complex that brought you human caused global warming, and the when-pigs-fly flu!

Save the People of Iceland - the Official Petition

The people of Iceland must be internationally supported, so they can feel safe in voting down debt-slavery. If Iceland falls, it won't be long before other countries suffer similar financial extortion.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Normally I do not bother with petitions, because in a nation with rigged elections, the government just ignores them. But in this case, I feel that a visible public expression of peaceful non-cooperation with the printers of pretty pieces of paper (henceforth known as the PPPP) is needed.

The Icelanders didn't create these debts, the debts were created for them. And that seems to be the standard practice of these private central banks; to so contrive affairs that the politicians are either coerced or bribed into borrowing vast sums of pretty printed paper, then force the general population into debt servitude in perpetuity.

Remember, the trap of a reserve banking system is that the moment that first pretty printed paper goes into circulation, more money is owed the banks than is actually in existence, meaning the debts the people are plunged into can never be repaid.

If the money is imaginary, then so are the debts!

China teen seen as hero for killing local official

When Li Shiming was stabbed through the heart by a hired assassin, few of his fellow villagers mourned the local Communist Party official many say made their lives hell by seizing land, extorting money and bullying people for years.

Instead, villagers in the northern town of Xiashuixi have made Li's teenage killer something of a local hero. More than 20,000 people from the coal-mining area petitioned a court for a lenient sentence.

"I didn't feel surprised at all when I heard Li Shiming was killed, because people wanted to kill him a long time ago," said villager Xin Xiaomei, who says her husband was harassed for years by Li after the two men had a personal dispute. "I wanted to kill Li myself, but I was too weak."

Grayson: Fight now or ‘kiss your country goodbye’ to Exxon, Wal-Mart

Grayson said the Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission ruling -- which removes decades of campaign spending limits on corporations -- "opens the floodgates for the purchases and sale of the law."

Webmaster's Commentary:

Obamacare was(is) going to force you to buy health insurance that health corporations want to sell you. You are already forced to buy ethanol blend gasoline that is damaging to your engines. Think of all the things you are now forced to pay for, from vapor recovery gas pump nozzles, to blue tooth headsets for driving, to safety seals on products that don't need safety seals (there was a safety seal on a bottle on insecticide I bought the other day), to flu vaccines, to the legions of people whose only job is to put stickers on products saying "Don't be a stupid idiot with this" and all of it mandated by politicians taking contributions from the makers of vapor recovery gas pump nozzles, blue tooth headsets, safety seals, flu vaccines, and stickers.

Imagine how much worse it is going to be when there is no limit to the amount of money corporations can spend to put their pet politicians, their WHORES into office, to pass laws mandating that you will buy whatever it is they are selling, from carbon credits to protection from nitrous oxide (they are test marketing that one now) and an endless stream of ever-more-costly and intrusive "security."

Folks, I have been warning you the government was headed this way for 16 years.

They have arrived.

We are now officially, thanks to the United States Supreme Court, a fascist state.

"I see in the near future a crisis approaching that unnerves me and causes me to tremble for the safety of my country. . . . corporations have been enthroned and an era of corruption in high places will follow, and the money power of the country will endeavor to prolong its reign by working upon the prejudices of the people until all wealth is aggregated in a few hands and the Republic is destroyed." -- U.S. President Abraham Lincoln, Nov. 21, 1864 (letter to Col. William F. Elkins)

The Terrorism Conundrum

In the wake of 9/11, almost anything the US government did was accepted uncritically by the public. The Patriot Act was quickly passed, abridging the freedoms that Americans had enjoyed for more than two hundred years with barely a whimper from Congress and the media. George W. Bush declared war on the world, defining his security doctrine as the right of the United States to act preemptively anywhere and at any time against any nation that the White House perceived to be a threat. Bush also declared his global war on terror, committing his administration to intervene using military and intelligence resources wherever his definition of terrorists was to be found.

Global warming is dead. What’s the next eco-scare?

As man-made global warming fears enter the ashbin of history, what will environmentalists, UN activists and politicians do to fill the void of a failed eco-scare?

Well, wonder no more….

Some forward thinking green activists and even the UN climate Chief have already taken up the task of test-marketing the next eco-scares to replace man-made global warming.

One of the most prominent eco-scares now being quietly promoted behind man-made climate fears is the allegedly “growing” nitrous oxide (a.k.a. “laughing gas”) threat to the planet.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Before you all get your knickers in a twist over this new "deadly" gas, nitrous oxide is the harmless propellant used in canned whip cream products.

Activist Granny D turns 100 on the 24th!

Webmaster's Commentary:

Granny issued a comment about the USSC ruling on corporate political funding which is not yet at her website, but here follows her text:

January 21, 2010 statement from Doris “Granny D” Haddock in response to the Supreme Court’s decision today to kill campaign finance reform.

Ten years ago, I walked from California to Washington, D.C. to help gather support for campaign finance reform. I used the novelty of my age (I was 90), to garner attention to the fact that our democracy, for which so many people have given their lives, is being subverted to the needs of wealthy interests, and that we must do something about it. I talked to thousands of people and gave hundreds of speeches and interviews, and, in every section of the nation, I was deeply moved by how heartsick Americans are by the current state of our politics.

Well, we got some reform bills passed, but things seem worse now than ever. Our good government reform groups are trying to staunch the flow of special-interest money into our political campaigns, but they are mostly whistling in a wind that has become a gale force of corrupting cash. Conditions are so bad that people now assume that nothing useful can pass Congress due to the vote-buying power of powerful financial interests. The health care reform debacle is but the most recent example.

The Supreme Court, representing a radical fringe that does not share the despair of the grand majority of Americans, has today made things considerably worse by undoing the modest reforms I walked for and went to jail for, and that tens of thousands of other Americans fought very hard to see enacted. So now, thanks to this Court, corporations can fund their candidates without limits and they can run mudslinging campaigns against everyone else, right up to and including election day.

The Supreme Court now opens the floodgates to usher in a new tsunami of corporate money into politics. If we are to retain our democracy, we must go a new direction until a more reasonable Supreme Court is in place. I would propose a one-two punch of the following nature:

A few states have adopted programs where candidates who agree to not accept special-interest donations receive, instead, advertising funds from their state. The programs work, and I would guess that they save their states more money than they cost by reducing corruption. Moving these reforms in the states has been very slow and difficult, but we must keep at it.

But we also need a new approach––something of a roundhouse punch. I would like to propose a flanking move that will help such reforms move faster: We need to dramatically expand the definition of what constitutes an illegal conflict of interest in politics.

If your brother-in-law has a road paving company, it is clear that you, as an elected official, must not vote to give him a contract, as you have a conflict of interest. Do you have any less of an ethical conflict if you are voting for that contract not because he is a brother-in-law, but because he is a major donor to your campaign? Should you ethically vote on health issues if health companies fund a large chunk of your campaign? The success of your campaign, after all, determines your future career and financial condition. You have a conflict.

Let us say, through the enactment of new laws, that a politician can no longer take any action, or arrange any action by another official, if the action, in the opinion of that legislative body’s civil service ethics officer, would cause special gain to a major donor of that official’s campaign. The details of such a program will be daunting, but we need to figure them out and get them into law.

Remarkably, many better corporations have an ethical review process to prevent their executives from making political contributions to officials who decide issues critical to that corporation. Should corporations have a higher standard than the United States Congress? And many state governments have tighter standards, too. Should not Congress be the flagship of our ethical standards? Where is the leadership to make this happen this year?

This kind of reform should also be pushed in the 14 states where citizens have full power to place proposed statutes on the ballot and enact them into law. About 70% of voters would go for a ballot measure to “toughen our conflict of interest law,” I estimate. In the scramble that would follow, either free campaign advertising would be required as a condition of every community’s contract with cable providers (long overdue), or else there would be a mad dash for public campaign financing programs on the model of Maine, Arizona, and Connecticut. Maybe both things would happen, which would be good.

I urge the large reform organizations to consider this strategy. They have never listened to me in the past, but they also have not gotten the job done and need to come alive or now get out of the way.

And to the Supreme Court, you force us to defend our democracy––a democracy of people and not corporations––by going in breathtaking new directions. And so we shall.

Why Is The US Military Occupying Four Airports In Haiti?

The United States is now operating at four airports to ferry aid and relief supplies to quake-devastated Haiti, a senior US military commander said Thursday.

In addition to the Caribbean nation's main port of entry, Port-au-Prince airport, US forces were also now at work at airports in the coastal city of Jacmel.

They were also operating in the neighboring Dominican Republic at San Isidro and Barahona, US Southern Command chief General Douglas Fraser said.

Around 11,000 US military personnel are currently controlling the operations both on the ground and offshore aboard US Navy and Coast Guard vessels, and another 4,000 US troops are expected to arrive in the coming days.

SCOTUS ruling = Powell Memo goal = Fall of democracy...

In short, the Powell Memo outlined an attack on our nation by corporations which championed fascism over democracy. You can read the whole memo at the above link.

SCOTUS has now ruled that corporations can actively alter elections via funding, undermining the very nature of the democratic process. Corporations have moved closer to a formal merger with government. This is called fascism by definition.

Iceland to hold referendum on international debt repayments

Late last year, the Icelandic parliament narrowly passed the so-called IceSave bill, which would provide a state guarantee to meet the onerous terms of the agreement, which is designed to repay London and The Hague for compensating hundreds of thousands of British and Dutch citizens who lost savings during the collapse of Iceland’s national bank, Landsbanki.

On January 5 President Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson refused to sign the bill into law, triggering a constitutional mandate that the bill be subjected to a national referendum. In the event the electorate votes down the bill, which looks likely according to the latest polls, the legislation will not come into effect.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Note the use of the word "onerous."

That has a specific meaning in international law. And it means that a people cannot be held liable for debts incurred by the government which were not for the benefit of the people.

Are We in Haiti because of Oil?

Once I observed the mass-murder posse of Team Obama, Bush and Clinton begin circling the wagons and the rapid US militarization of Port au Prince, including the occupation of the Presidential Palace, to the tune of now almost 10,000 US boots on the ground, I began to get suspicious. Call me crazy. I know of the sad history of Haiti imposed upon the tiny former slave nation by one imperial power after the next. But when I see 10,000 American soldiers descend upon a nation in less than a week, my radar flies into the red zone.

Webmaster's Commentary:

The number of US troops deploying to Haiti is now 20,000.

Obama authorizes covert economic war against Venezuela

WMR’s intelligence sources have reported that the Obama administration has authorized an economic war against Venezuela in order to destabilize the government of President Hugo Chavez.

After a successful coup against Chavez ally, President Manuel Zelaya of Honduras, and the very thin 51-49 percent electoral win by Chile’s billionaire right-winger Sebastian Pinera on January 17, a buoyed Obama White House has given a green light for political operatives in Venezuela, many of whom operate under the cover of non-governmental organizations (NGOs), to set the stage for massive street demonstrations to protest Chavez’s devaluation of the bolivar, Venezuela’s currency.

FBI warns lawyers: Beware of ex-wives bearing checks

The fraudulent client seeking legal representation is an ex-wife "on assignment" in an Asian country, and she claims to be pursuing a collection of divorce settlement monies from her ex-husband in the U.S. The law firm agrees to represent the ex-wife, sends an e-mail to the ex-husband, and receives a "certified" check for the settlement via delivery service. The ex-wife instructs the firm to wire the funds, less the retainer fee, to an overseas bank account. When the scam is executed successfully, the law firm wires the money before discovering the check is counterfeit.

Green Eggs and Hamm: Ode to the Brady Campaign

VIA http://waronguns.blogspot.com/

(After the controversy over the Austin gun show situation, perhaps a bit of humor is necessary to lighten the mood. Regarding the hot-button topic of gun control, the following satirical poem is a whimsical take on the Brady Campaign agenda.)

The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence is an organization “devoted to creating an America free from gun violence…” While not calling itself a “gun ban” organization, extensive research has determined this claim is disingenuous at best. Click here to read more about how the Brady Campaign employs deception and poor research to promote their agenda.

US Congress for Sale: Foreign Bids Welcome

Imagine a Goldman Sachs or Citigroup sponsored smear campaign against Ron Paul.
It could even be paid for with bailout money!

The US Supreme Court has just ruled that in the interest of freedom of speech,
corporations ought to be allowed to make unlimited donations to political campaigns.
The Court also ruled that corporations should not be prohibited from directly sponsoring
political advertisements.

The implications of this ruling effectively ends what integrity might have remained in
the electoral process. Despite our high-minded ideals about the process, elections are
decided on television. The candidate who spends the most on advertisements is usually the candidate who wins. With this ruling, corporations can now easily buy members of Congress
