Bernard Madoff, the Mafia, and Naked Short Selling

Bernard L. Madoff was once the chairman of the NASDAQ stock exchange. He was one of the most important market makers on Wall Street. And he managed what was, by some estimates, the largest hedge fund on the planet.

Yes, Bernard Madoff was an impressive man. That much was clear even before we learned that his $50 billion Ponzi scheme may have been orchestrated in cahoots with the most powerful, sophisticated, and indiscriminately murderous organized crime syndicate the world has ever known.

Eating the Rich, Tasty!

Welcome to the golden age of schadenfreude.
By Vanessa Richmond
Published: January 14, 2009

Mmmm, schadenfreude. Is there anything more delicious at this point of an economic cycle?

Why? At this point, doesn't everyone know at least one good, honest, hard working person who's lost a job or at least suffered a downturn? And though because economic forces are complex, it's impossible to blame just a few individuals, it's also almost impossible not to feel some satisfaction about the plight of a multi-billionaire who now has to fly economy instead of in the private leer jet. Poor thing. See -- I started out trying to explain the phenomenon and ended up relishing a rich person's misfortune. Hands up if you didn't enjoy it, too. Windows virus infects 9m computers

The number of Windows computers infected with the new "downadup" worm – also known as "Conficker" and "Kido" – has exploded to almost 9 million worldwide, from roughly 2.4m last Thursday, according to the computer security company F-Secure.

The growth in the number of infected machines – which the company's researchers called "just amazing" – makes it one of the worst malware outbreaks of the past five years. The principal targets are corporate Windows servers belonging to small businesses who have not installed security updates released by Microsoft last October. F-Secure estimates that a third of all potentially vulnerable systems have not had the update.

Drought is always a harbinger of war, said Charlie (whose real name is Ghassan but he prefers this movie-inspired nickname). US Jewish Peace Lobby Isolated on Gaza

by Daniel Luban

The three-week-old war in Gaza – halted Saturday by an Israeli cease-fire – has had a polarizing effect on the U.S. Jewish community, resulting in a deeper and at times acrimonious split between dovish groups that are skeptical of the Israeli military campaign and centrist and hawkish groups that have been broadly supportive of it.

Perhaps the most important aspect of this split, however, has been the reaction of organizations commonly viewed as representative of "moderate" and "liberal" Jewish public opinion. These groups have overwhelmingly lined up in support of Israeli military action.

In the process, participants and observers say, they may have driven a firmer wedge between the so-called "peace lobby" and the remainder of the constellation of Jewish groups.

Ahmadinejad demands prosecution of Israel's leaders

Israel's arch foes condemned the Gaza onslaught at a summit in Qatar on Friday, with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad calling for the prosecution of Israeli leaders by an international court.
Also at the summit, Qatar and Mauritania decided to suspended their relations with Israel, a Mauritanian diplomat said.

"Mauritania and Qatar have decided during a meeting behind closed doors to suspend their ties with Israel," the diplomat, who requested anonymity, told AFP.

The move followed appeals by both Ahmadinejad and his Syrian counterpart Bashar al-Assad that Arab states sever any ties they had with Israel.

Devastation has always been a goal for Israel

Israel’s military strategy in Gaza, even in what is likely to be the “final act” as officials are calling it, is following a blueprint laid down during the Lebanon war more than two years ago.

Then, Israel destroyed much of Lebanon’s infrastructure in a month of intensive air strikes. Even in the war’s last few hours, as a ceasefire was being finalised, Israel fired more than a million cluster bombs over south Lebanon, apparently in the hope that the area could be made as uninhabitable as possible.

Similarly, Israel’s destruction of Gaza has been continuing with unrelenting vigour, even though according to reports in the Israeli media the air force exhausted what it calls its “bank of Hamas targets” in the first few days of fighting.

Israel’s Hands Around Our Throat Are Showing

In the closing days of the Bush disaster Israel is moving to consolidate gains it has made over the past eight years toward its ultimate goals of “Greater Israel” and the Zionist-dominated new world order. The urgency of the hour for Israel can be seen in the open display of Jewish/Israeli political muscle-flexing in Washington. The normally invisible Israeli hand around America’s throat has been clearly visible lately, as America moved to take four specific actions on Israel’s behalf which will probably prove to be harmful to America’s interests, forcing a major expansion of the war on terror.

Gideon Levy, Haaretz: IDF has no mercy for Gaza's children

The IDF has no mercy for the children in Gaza nursery schools
By Gideon Levy, Haaretz Correspondent

The fighting in Gaza is "war deluxe." Compared with previous wars, it is child's play - pilots bombing unimpeded as if on practice runs, tank and artillery soldiers shelling houses and civilians from their armored vehicles, combat engineering troops destroying entire streets in their ominous protected vehicles without facing serious opposition. A large, broad army is fighting against a helpless population and a weak, ragged organization that has fled the conflict zones and is barely putting up a fight. All this must be said openly, before we begin exulting in our heroism and victory.

Horrifying Story Now Unfolding

The alleged perpetrator has been identified as “Israel” and his victims, as “the Palestinians”. The suspect has not been apprehended although authorities know where he is. A spokesman says they are awaiting further evidence that any wrong has actually been committed. Due to legal technicalities, he may have been acting within his rights.

The Afghan Scam The Untold Story of Why the U.S. Is Bound to Fail in Afghanistan

By Ann Jones

The first of 20,000 to 30,000 additional U.S. troops are scheduled to arrive in Afghanistan next month to re-win the war George W. Bush neglected to finish in his eagerness to start another one. However, "winning" the military campaign against the Taliban is the lesser half of the story.

Why it was time for a Dem in the oval office

The shadow government that controls both parties makes equal use of Democrats and Republicans. They need to continue to show some small degree of difference between the parties, to maintain the illusion of choice on election day. These small differences are played up as much as possible, while the huge areas of agreement are ignored.

People with a conscience generally see the Dems as the good guys and the Repubs as the bad guys. This is a particularly useful fiction at this point in history because so many progressives were distraught to the point of despair about the Bush administration. Some reason needed to be held out for hope, and indeed Obama's main theme was hope.

Facebook is the new front in pro-Israel PR war
by ben harris & joshua spiro

As Israel takes to the Internet in search of innovative ways to make its case about Gaza to the world, Jews around the globe also are utilizing innovative methods — and new technological tools — to explain what the Jewish state is facing as it acts to protect its southern flank from rocket fire.

How to correctly and systematically boycott Israeli-exported products

If you're of the opinion that Israel deserves a boycott right about now, you're probably wondering how one knows a product they're about to buy was exported from Israel?

Here's how.

The answer is to download a database that matches all UPC product codes (barcodes) on the market as of yet to their respective manufacturers. You can actually download such a database as it is free and distributed under the Creative Commons license (here). Then, simply do a search for "Israel" to find which companies market products which are made in Israel.

Good news: I've done all the work for you!

Here is a comprehensive spreadsheet of all companies exporting products from Israel.
Here is a comprehensive chart of all Israeli products registered by UPC to date.
Boycott ahoy!

US: Unprecedented Security As Obama Set For White House
2009-01-15 15:02

WASHINGTON, DC: An unprecedented security blanket has been draped over the US capital for Barack Obama's inauguration next week, and the threat level to the country's first black president is expected to remain high well beyond his swearing-in.

With estimates of up to a record two million people attending, the Department of Homeland Security has designated Obama's inauguration a national special security event.

Illegal Aliens Will Have Access to New SCHIP Expansion, Smokers to Pay For It

So let me get this straight, in order to provide healthcare to the children of families who already have healthcare, the Democrats want to impose a tax that will disproportionally hurt the poorer families. Yeah, that makes sense.

Fault-line between Jews over Gaza

The idea that the assault in Gaza is tarnishing the image of Judaism internationally has been echoed by Jewish protesters in non-Arab countries.

Last week, a group of eight Canadian-Jewish women occupied the Israeli consulate in Toronto.

One of the organisers Judy Rebick, a lecturer at Ryerson University, said: "There are many Jews across the world who are ashamed and don't want this massacre to take place in our name."

"A Radical Revolution of Values": Dr. King's Most Important Speech

"A nation that continues year after year to spend more money on military defense than on programs of social uplift is approaching spiritual death."~~Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

No, it's not the "I Have A Dream" speech most people associate with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and ceremoniously trot out every year as we commemorate his birthday. These words are from a King speech largely ignored by mainstream commentators who are content to pigeonhole him as a "slain civil rights leader," as though his Nobel Prize was awarded solely for his civil rights efforts.
