FLASHBACK - Mandatory anthrax vaccinations raise concerns

Within days of taking the two shots, Francis' feet began to tingle and burn. When he later took the second in a series of six anthrax shots, his health slid downhill. Since then, the 45-year-old messmate from Las Vegas has fought a rare nervous system disease known as Guillain-Barre Syndrome, along with chronic pain, pneumonia and a life-threatening blood clot.

Vaccine makers are immune from lawsuits, so Francis sued the government, winning what his lawyer calls a "substantial" settlement in December 2005. Others say Uncle Sam shelled out about $2 million.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Vaccine makers' immunity was created by the Homeland Security Act just in time to ward off lawsuits over the link between the mercury-based preservative Thimerasol and autism in vaccinated children.

Living Without Health Insurance

Still, if you're a relatively healthy person, if you're cash-strapped or need to pay off a debt, or if you want to strike out in a new direction on your own, you might find my tips useful in helping you go insurance-free for a couple of years.

Or even longer.

You'll worry less about doing without those "bennies" you've got used to for so long. And the less worried you are over going it alone, the more you'll be able to stand up to the big lie of modern life – that people need the government to survive.

They don't.

Small cameras and fake tourists: how Angels and Demons flouted Vatican ban

Special effects supervisor Ryan Cook told Italian film magazine Ciak: "The ban on filming put us in serious difficulty because we were not able to carry out the photographic surveys necessary to reconstruct the setting. So for weeks we sent a team of people who mixed with tourists and took thousands of photos and video footage."

The move was necessary because leaders of the Catholic church, still smarting from The Da Vinci Code's assertion that Christ married and fathered children with Mary Magdalene, had banned the film-makers from filming in or around any of Rome's churches. Father Marco Fibbi, spokesman for the diocese of Rome, said at the time: "Normally we read the script, but this time it was not necessary. The name Dan Brown was enough."

As Swine Flu Spreads, Conspiracy Theories of Laboratory Origins Abound

Perhaps due to the genetic makeup of the fast-spreading H1N1 strain of influenza -- which includes genetic elements from bird flu, swine flu and human flu spanning three continents -- there is considerable speculation that the origins of this virus are man-made.

It's not an unreasonable question to ask: Could world governments, spooked by the prospect of radical climate change caused by over-population of the planet, have assembled a super-secret task force to engineer and distribute a super virulent strain of influenza designed to "correct" the human population (and institute global Martial Law)?

Webmaster's Commentary:

It is a clear sign of the loss of trust in government that so many people are willing to seriously consider these possibilities.

After all, we know the US Government uses torture. We know the US Government lies us into wars. We know the US Government carries out biological warfare experiments on citizens, often without their knowledge.

Remember the blankets infected with smallpox the US Government gave to the Indians?

Or the US Government attack on the WWI veterans for demanding their back pay?

Or the time when the US Government allowed millions to die from Pellagra even though they knew it was caused by a niacin deficiency, but did nothing because most of the deaths were among poor blacks?

It is therefore impossible to rule out the possibility of a deliberate infection by the US Government, even for so trivial a reason as distracting us from the torture scandal.

QUESTIONS ABOUT GOLDMAN SACHS' ROLE IN MARKET

First, Goldman Sachs accepted $10 billion in government money under the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP), so it is gambling with taxpayer money.

But the bigger thing to remember is this: The firm may be living up to its nickname -- Government Sachs -- and might be doing the government's bidding.

The stock market rally these past seven weeks has certainly made it easier for the Obama adminis tration to do its job. That, plus a little fancy account ing during the first quarter, has calmed peoples' nerves quite a bit.

Rallies on Wall Street, of course, are good things -- unless it turns out that some people know the government is rigging the stock market and you don't.

Zimerman made the announcement during a Sunday concert at California’s Walt Disney Concert Hall.

Brzezinski was right, of course. Obama was the perfect choice for president. Not because of his experience. He had none. He was a two year senator with a resume' small enough to fit on the back of a matchbox. Still Obama had what Brzezinski and Co. were looking for, symbolism; the kind of symbolism that connected him to people around the world and made them feel like one of their own had finally clawed their way to the top. Even better, Obama was a charismatic populist who could fill stadiums with adoring fans and put a benign face on America's interventions in Afghanistan and Iraq. What more could Brzezinski hope for?

The Most Monsterous MEME in All History

So, let’s restate the issue here. The Ashkenazim Jews are not the Israelites of the Bible, but usually believe themselves to be and want the surrounding Gentile populace to think so. They are a separate racial group, one that may look something like Whites and uses that fact against us when convenient or not, if that’s good for them, too. This race is based on a sometimes bizarre and hateful religious meme called the Talmud, created by the descendants of the Pharisees who had Jesus executed. This is NOT the same as the Old Testament Torah, like they want you to believe. Those Jews who are not specifically religious in outward behavior, have ingested the superiority meme of Talmudic Jews and basically act like all the rest.

The swine flu crisis lays bare the meat industry's monstrous power

The Mexican swine flu, a genetic chimera probably conceived in the faecal mire of an industrial pigsty, suddenly threatens to give the whole world a fever.

Perhaps it is not surprising that Mexico lacks both capacity and political will to monitor livestock diseases, but the situation is hardly better north of the border, where surveillance is a failed patchwork of state jurisdictions, and corporate livestock producers treat health regulations with the same contempt with which they deal with workers and animals.

Israel Updates Biodefense Program to Counter Terror Threat

Israel has updated its biological defense efforts to counter threats from terrorists and regional rivals such as Iran, the Jerusalem Post reported yesterday

"Israel has the best solution to this threat in the world," Giora Eiland, former head of the Israeli national security council, said yesterday. "I can say with certainty that Israel has prepared a series of steps designed to deal with biological warfare."

"A bioweapon can be dispersed in a hall full of people and the consequences would only be felt a week later," Eiland added. "This is unlike a chemical attack, which would be felt immediately. The swine flu (that has broken out in Mexico and, apparently, other countries) helps illustrate the threat of bioweapons."

TORONTO, Apr 23 (IPS) - With reports that SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome) can survive for up to 24 hours on inanimate surfaces, turning any object into a potential transmission source, it looks like the virus might indeed be the global pandemic suggested by health experts. But what exactly does that mean?

David Heymann, executive director of the communicable diseases section at the World Health Organization (WHO), says SARS could pose a more serious global health threat than any other new disease in the past 20 years, with the sole exception of HIV, which causes AIDS.

Deadly strain of swine flu gets under radar of the immune system

When the swine flu virus was identified as belonging to the H1N1 family it raised hope that humans might have some residual immunity to it, which might contain its pandemic potential. H1N1 viruses commonly infect humans and one was included in this year’s seasonal flu vaccine.

Genetic analysis, however, has now indicated that the H1N1 swine flu is too different from human H1N1 for previous vaccinations or flu infections to offer much protection.

“The homology [similarity] is very low, 70 per cent or less,” Professor Barclay said. “There is very little similarity, and you would expect there to be very little protection from antibodies to H1 human strains.

The World Health Organisation could raise its pandemic alert level to phase 4 or even to phase 5 -- indicating a deadly swine flu was spreading significantly among humans, a WHO spokesman said on Monday.

Iraq stability is all talk, Baathists say

The continued presence of US troops and a failure by the Iraqi government to abandon a narrow sectarian agenda are the underlying causes of a recent surge in Iraq violence, according to the outlawed Baath Party.

Obama Demands Right to Recruit Minors for Military

Humboldt County, California voters passed measures F and J last November prohibiting military recruiters from initiating contact with minors. Now the Obama administration is demanding that the law be overturned. A court hearing is scheduled for June 9 in Oakland, California. The measures which passed by a large margin allow recruitment to occur if the minor initiates contact. Federal government lawyers claim "irreparable harm" if the laws stand.

FLASHBACK - Deadly 1957 Strain of Flu Is Found in Lab-Test Kits

The rush action, recommended by the World Health Organization of the United Nations, was prompted by a slim risk that the samples could start a global flu epidemic. The vials were sent by a company in the United States to labs in 18 countries, officials said.

It was not immediately clear why the 1957 pandemic strain, which killed 1 million to 4 million people, was included in the proficiency testing kits. Dr. Stohr described that decision as "unwise" and "unfortunate."

The 1957 strain has not been included in the flu vaccine since 1968, and anyone born after that date has no immunity to it.

Newly Released Memo: Government ‘Minders’ at 9/11 Commission Interviews ‘Intimidated’ Witnesses

The memo, entitled “Executive Branch Minders’ Intimidation of Witnesses,” complains that:

* Minders “answer[ed] questions directed at witnesses;”

* Minders acted as “monitors, reporting to their respective agencies on Commission staffs lines of inquiry and witnesses’ verbatim responses.” The staff thought this “conveys to witnesses that their superiors will review their statements and may engage in retribution;” and

* Minders “positioned themselves physically and have conducted themselves in a manner that we believe intimidates witnesses from giving full and candid responses to our questions.”

Scarborough: ‘Rational fear’ justifies torture

In debating the use of torture on MSNBC’s Morning Joe, co-host Mika Brzezinski expressed a concern that “fear and reality will overtake morality.” However, host Joe Scarborough did not see that as a problem and seemed to believe it was completely appropriate for what he called “rational fear” to far outweigh morality.

Webmaster's Commentary:

We'll remind you that you said that, Joe, just before the waterboarding starts.

On Monday, Joseph Wilson, the former Clinton administrator ambassador and husband of outed CIA agent Valerie Plame Wilson who traveled to Niger in 2002 to investigate claims that Saddam Hussein had sought to acquire uranium, called on Cheney to apply the same standard of transparency to himself.

GOP Stripped Flu Pandemic Preparedness From Stimulus

Remember way back in the day, President Obama delivered his Not Really The State Of The Union address, and the GOP trotted out Future Of The Republican Party Supra-Genius Bobbly Jindal to provide a rebuttal? Well, we all had some laughs, didn't we? Mainly because Jindal was all: "They want to spend stimulus money on volcano monitoring? Why everyone knows that the Hill Witch keeps tabs on our volcanoes by floating chicken bones in her own intestinal ichor!" And then Alaska's Mount Redoubt erupted, suggesting there might be something to this "let's monitor volcanoes with government-funded science" idea.

Webmaster's Commentary:

The finger-pointing starts.

Blood Lust

War. The ultimate game. An addiction to death and the rush it brings. Even tho war is hell, many players cannot fathom doing anything else..ever. I know such a man. A man trying to leave the "theater" behind but cant because as he puts it, "it is what I am good at." But there is a more sinister underlying reason people such as these return for tour after tour and make the military their life's careers. The true warrior is of a different breed than the ones repulsed by death and destruction but live by the creed, "I like killing things." Blood lust. Pleasure derived in death.

Ice at the North Pole in 1958 and 1959 - not so thick

What would NSIDC and our media make of a photo like this if released by the NAVY today? Would we see headlines like “NORTH POLE NOW OPEN WATER”? Or maybe “Global warming melts North Pole”? Perhaps we would. sensationalism is all the rage these days. If it melts it makes headlines.

Bin Laden could be dead, whereabouts unknown: Zardari

Pakistan's President Asif Ali Zardari said on Monday that the whereabouts of al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden remained a mystery and there was a suspicion that he could be dead.

Speaking to international media, Zardari said U.S. officials had told him that they had no trace of the al Qaeda chief, although they habitually say he is most likely in Pakistan.

Pakistan's own intelligence agencies were no wiser, either, Zardari said.

"There is no news," the president said. "They obviously feel that he does not exist anymore but that's not confirmed, we can't confirm that."

Torture whitewash from The Dark Side

The US Senate report, also just released, reads like deja vu all over again: the US establishment under Bush was a replay of the Spanish Inquisition. And it all started even before a single "high-profile al-Qaeda detainee" was captured. What Bush, vice president Dick Cheney, defense secretary Donald Rumsfeld and assorted little inquisitors wanted was above all to prove the non-existent link between Saddam Hussein's Iraq and al-Qaeda, the better to justify a pre-emptive, illegal war planned by the now-defunct Project for the New American Century (PNAC) in the late 1990s. The torture memos were just a cog in the imperial machine.

Israel's secret plan for West Bank expansion

Israel has taken a step towards expanding the largest settlement in the West Bank, a move Palestinians warn will leave their future state unviable and further isolate its future capital, East Jerusalem

The Israeli Peace Now group, which monitors settlement growth, said it had obtained plans drawn up by experts that the interior ministry had commissioned which call for expanding the sprawling Maale Adumim settlement near Jerusalem southward by 1200 hectares, placing what is now the separate smaller settlement of Kedar within Maale Adumim's boundaries.

The expansion is on a highly sensitive piece of real estate that both sides see as holding the key to whether the Palestinians will have a viable state with their own corridor between the north and south parts of the West Bank.

The danger of an Israeli strike on Iran

The fallout from Israel's strike on Osirak was serious but limited. But a preemptive strike on Iranian soil would border on catastrophic. Consider:

•Iran has signaled that if attacked, it would close the Strait of Hormuz, through which 20 percent of the world's oil flows. This would plunge the world into economic calamity.

We're All Torturers Now

The MPs caught abusing prisoners at Abu Ghraib later claimed that they did so because they were merely following orders from superiors, orders to "soften up" the detainees who would then be more amenable to interrogation. I keep wondering whether they inadvertently softened up the rest of us as well. We have become so casual about torture that we now openly debate its efficacy—something nobody would have dared do in the first days after Abu Ghraib. The fight playing out between the left and the right now isn't "Did we water-board?" We already knew we did. It is barely even "Was it legal?" Virtually nobody seriously argues that it was.

Webmaster's Commentary:

I disagree. All moral Americans are and remain horrified, and the horror only increases as we see that the torture was not just a few bad apples, but actual policy of the government itself.
