The Reagan Revolution For Dummies: This Graph Shows Just When The Class War Started, And How Many Prisoners It’s Taken

I’ve heard from more than a few people who get all hot under the collar when I say that the whole class war against America started under Reagan. This graph pretty much says it all: it was Reagan who saw to it that America defeated China, Russia and all the other repressive regimes… to make us the world’s number one Gulag Nation. Why did he lock up so many Americans, and keep them there? Put it this way: how can you get away with looting the middle-class and working-class wealth without an uprising? How can you keep people down when you arrange it so that the CEOs’ pay goes from 30 times their workers’ salary when Reagan took over, to over 500 times their salaries? Here’s how you make sure they shut up or else:

US will appoint Afghan 'prime minister' to bypass Hamid Karzai

The US and its European allies are preparing to plant a high-profile figure in the heart of the Kabul government in a direct challenge to the Afghan president, Hamid Karzai, the Guardian has learned.

The creation of a new chief executive or prime ministerial role is aimed at bypassing Karzai. In a further dilution of his power, it is proposed that money be diverted from the Kabul government to the provinces. Many US and European officials have become disillusioned with the extent of the corruption and incompetence in the Karzai government, but most now believe there are no credible alternatives, and predict the Afghan president will win re-election in August.

The prison at Guantanamo Bay has become such an international symbol of the U.S. abandoning its principles because it reflects an anti-terrorism policy gone badly awry. First, the Bush administration was both callous and careless in imprisoning people, even paying unreliable tribal allies for captives. Second, the U.S. government created no effective and objective truth-determining processto assess guilt. Third, Washington employed torture, violating both domestic and international law.

Behavior detection is a touchy topic at the nation's airports. An October report by the National Research Council, an arm of the National Academy of Sciences, concluded that there is "no scientific consensus" that behavioral surveillance techniques like those employed by the TSA are an effective way to combat terrorism. Some security experts and civil libertarians say the practice also invites ethnic profiling.

But the agency defends the practice. Carl Maccario of the TSA helped develop the program known as Screening Passengers by Observation Techniques, or SPOT.

Water, Crisis and War

Many, including the US, may believe Iran and North Korea’s existent or non-existent nuclear weapons pose the gravest threat to human existence. However, the scarcity of safe drinking water will prove to be the biggest challenge to humanity in the coming decades.

Webmaster's Commentary:

There are some pretty effective and very inexpensive water purification and desalinization systems out there. And I have no doubt that if we were to take just 10% of the money spent on making bombs we could develop some pretty decent water treatment technologies.

But I suspect that this concern over the nonavailability of fresh water is being promoted, like global warming, for private profit. Already much water service, formerly a function of government is now in private hands. People drink water from plastic bottles because the tap water, harmless in my childhood, is now contaminated with industrial chemicals and medical wastes that the municipal water treatment plants cannot remove.

Corporations clearly want monopolistic control over the basic necessities of life; the better to control and exploit the masses!

As shown in a January 22, 1963 Warren Commission closed-door secret session, of which a surviving stenographer’s tape (ordered destroyed but was not) clearly shows that the Commission decided early on to go for the lone gunman scenario. They were afraid of finding out more than they wanted to know about Lee H. Oswald and feared if it were discovered that he was a government agent of some type, then the public would never believe the lone gunman theory. Notice the thinking here—they have a predetermined conclusion and they concerned about the pubic not buying it. This is before the first witness was called to testify!

Geithner: private sector needs to take risks

U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner on Monday said that the private sector must be willing to take on some risk for his bank asset cleansing plan to work.

Geithner, briefing media on the plan, said creating public-private partnerships to buy distressed assets from banks will help to avert a longer and deeper recession and make it easier for banks to raise private capital.

Webmaster's Commentary:

The private sector doesn't WANT those assets, or they wouldn't be a problem in the first place.

And the bottom line is that the reason the assets are toxic is that ordinary Americans have had their jobs stolen from them and sent to other countries and cannot afford to buy these foreclosed homes.

Until the jobs come back, the economy cannot be saved. Anything else is just rearranging the deck chairs.

A huge part of the company's credit default swap business was designed, quite simply, to allow banks to make their balance sheets look safer than they actually were. . . The less risky the assets, obviously, the lower the regulatory capital requirement. How did banks get their risk measures low? Why, they bought AIG's credit default swaps, of course! The swaps meant that the risk of loss was transferred to AIG. . . which meant minimal capital requirements, which the banks all wanted so they could increase their leverage and buy yet more "risk-free" assets.

FBI planting spies in U.S. mosques, Muslim groups say

Ten U.S. Muslim organizations threatened this week to cease working with the FBI, citing "McCarthy-era tactics" by the agency, including efforts to covertly infiltrate California mosques.

The groups claim the FBI has sent undercover agents posing as worshippers into mosques, pressured Muslims to become informants, labeled civil rights advocates as criminals and spread misinformation.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Mar 22 14:15

These kinds of government tactics violate our fundamental constitutional rights. They make it enormously difficult to sustain grass-roots organizing. They create an atmosphere of fear and distrust which undermines any effort to challenge official policy.

Similar measures were used in the 1960s as part of a secret FBI program known as "COINTELPRO." COINTELPRO was later exposed and officially ended. But the evidence shows that it actually persisted and that clandestine operations to discredit and disrupt opposition movements have become an institutional feature of national and local government in the US.

Toxic Asset Plan Foresees Big Subsidies for Investors

And this idea that auctioning the assets to the highest bidder will protect the taxpayers' forced "investment" is nonsense, because if the assets had any real worth, they would not be a toxic problem to start with.

So, in the end, the government will get the gold from the gold mine and the people will get the shaft!

... in the end.

Former WABC radio news anchor George Weber was found murdered inside his Brooklyn apartment today after failing to report to work for two days, sources told The Post.

Weber, who would have turned 58 tomorrow, was discovered in his bed shortly before 10 a.m. inside his Carroll Gardens with multiple stab wounds to his neck after his bosses, concerned that he hadn't shown up for work, called cops.

Obama advisers note populist tone, urge restraint

While acknowledging public outrage over $165 million in bonuses paid to a financial firm that just months earlier had turned to taxpayers for aid, the administration's economic advisers said President Barack Obama wouldn't "govern out of anger."

Webmaster's Commentary:

Don't worry, Barack. We The People will pick up the slack.

What Obama is getting ready to do is veto the tax on the bonuses and he is looking for some way to sell it the American people.

But there is an old saying, "Don't piss down my back and tell me it's raining." What that means is that even the best salesman can;t sell a product everybody knows is worthless. You would thing that after the debacle over forcing soldiers to buy insurance to pay for their own combat injuries that Obama would comprehend this, but apparently he's not much brighter than Dubya was.

Gordon Brown - We are about to take the war against terror to a new level

The approach we are taking tackles the immediate threat through the relentless pursuit of terrorists and disruption of their plots, builds up our defences against attacks and our resilience to deal with them, and addresses the longer term causes - understanding what leads people to become radicalised, so we can stop the process.

Privatising Water is Denying People a Human Right: UN

The President of the United Nations General Assembly has told delegates at the 5th World Water Forum (WWF) in Istanbul, Turkey, that, "those who are committed to the privatization of water, making it a commodity like oil, are denying people a human right as basic as the air we breathe."

In a speech delivered by his senior advisor on water Maude Barlow, UN president Miguel d'Escoto Brockmann said, "We must work quickly to guarantee that access to drinking water constitutes a fundamental right of all peoples..."

WaMu holding company sues FDIC over bank seizure

Lawyers for the holding company, Washington Mutual Inc., argue that the bank was worth more than the $1.9 billion JPMorgan paid for it in a deal arranged by the FDIC. The lawsuit argues that if WaMu's assets had been liquidated prudently, they would have been worth more than that.

Ning Exposed - Tech Company Scams its Clients

Clients of Ning are outraged over a decision that Ning made public last week. The software maker sent out an email to all of its clients, those who have created a social network on Ning, stating that they would email all members of all websites who use the Ning software to promote the newly designed Ning.com.

“Please do not send the email to my members. I pay you not to advertise on my site and I don’t think you should target my members directly,” says one Ning network creator and paying customer. Ning charges network creators to keep all Ning promotional links off their site. Some members have been paying this fee for a couple of years and so are even more upset at the direct email marketing campaign. Why pay the fee?

Fed Running Out of Ammo

The Fed’s decision to purchase $300 billion of long-term treasury bonds is indicative of two things: 1) The U.S. government has lost all sense of value relative to its currency, and 2) The U.S. Federal Reserve is getting desperate and is running out of options.

Far from giving the economy any kind of boost, these tactics are essentially more of the same, which has already proven futile in terms of getting the economy moving again. Major financial institutions are not lending or borrowing much more than they were when the crisis began, and all the Fed is doing is undermining what little value is left in the U.S. Dollar.

Bill in Texas would allow creationists to grant Masters of Science degrees

Berman admits that his 'inspiration' for the bill was the Institute for Creation Research Graduate School, a Young Earth Creationism institution that has been trying to achieve certification in Texas for two years. Young Earth Creationism, much more popular than the recent Intelligent Design Creationism, is essentially Biblical literalism – Earth is 10,000 years old, Noah's Flood occurred, Adam and Eve were real people. ICRGS insists that they teach more than just “Biblical Creationism," which is based only on the word of the Bible; they also have incorporated tenets of “Scientific Creationism” into their bylaws. Most of these relate to origins of Earth and the evolution of species.

The long and sadistic history behind the CIA's torture techniques

All the techniques in the accounts of torture by the International Committee of the Red Cross, as reported Monday, collected from 14 detainees held in CIA custody, fit a long historical pattern of Anglo-Saxon modern. The ICRC report apparently includes details of CIA practices unknown until now, details that point to practices with names, histories, and political influences. In torture, hell is always in the details.

Man's contribution to climate change is negligible in geologic time

Some evidence exists suggesting that the current phase of warming MAY have peaked in the 1970s and the earth MAY be returning to a cooling phase. Regardless of the rhetoric on either side of the arguments, man's total contribution to global climate change is negligible and probably not measurable within the context of geologic time. Instantaneous events like the asteroid or meteor strike that ended the age of dinosaurs by creating a global wide "dust cloud" or continuous volcanic eruptions that have also shrouded the earth with ash and smoke clouds have had a far greater and long lasting effect on climates. If all of man's "contribution" were to cease immediately, the net effect, measured in geologic time, on the earth's natural warming and cooling cycles would not be measurable.

Archaeological Views: Who Pays for Excavations?

We archaeologists don’t like to admit it, but all private funding sources have agendas. Even at the lower level, many of the consortium members that commonly help support excavations in terms of both staff and funding are religious colleges and seminaries. Whenever one accepts philanthropy, there is, as Ilan has phrased it, a moral price attached. That some foundations are more overtly political while others are more subtle in their stated interests is less relevant than we would like to think; it is, after all, only a matter of degree.

Monsanto's Many Attempts to Destroy All Seeds but Their Own

Some say that if farmers don’t want problems from Monsanto, they simply shouldn’t buy Monsanto’s GMO seeds. But it isn’t quite that simple. Monsanto contaminates the fields, trespasses onto the land taking samples, and then sues, saying they own the crop.

Meanwhile, Monsanto is taking many other steps to keep farmers and everyone else from having any access at all to buying, collecting, and saving of normal seeds:

With its own municipal development plan in place since 1969, the Jewish quarter and its modern buildings are expanding, out and over the city. Another layer is being added on top of the many below. Jerusalem is changing character, yet again, in the hands of new rulers.

“The Israelis want this city to be a Jewish city,” said Yasser Qous, a guide who runs alternative tours around the Old City. “But the history of Jerusalem is far too complex to narrow it down to one people. The city must remain diverse and open, a spiritual centre for three religions and home to dozens of peoples.”

Has a ‘Katrina Moment’ Arrived?

A CHARMING visit with Jay Leno won’t fix it. A 90 percent tax on bankers’ bonuses won’t fix it. Firing Timothy Geithner won’t fix it. Gross brutality during British "terrorism" raid

During what his counsel Phillippa Kaufmann described as a "prolonged and violent series of gratuitous assaults" the 34-year-old IT support analyst claims officers forced him into the Muslim prayer position before shouting "Where is your God now? … Pray to him."

Kaufmann said: "The acts of the officers were ones of gross brutality, intended to humiliate and debase the claimant and to make him fear for his life. The officers engaged over a prolonged period in extreme, sadistic and dangerous acts of violence against an individual who was completely restrained and vulnerable.

"This was an extremely serious abuse of power which is in no sense justified, nor was it excusable on the grounds that it was perpetrated in the heat of an arrest for terrorism."

Webmaster's Commentary:

As the instruments of the state begin to reveal themselves, the instruments of the state will suppress their own doubts by becoming ever more brutal in an attempt to force the real world to conform to the beliefs they have been indoctrinated with; hence the forcing of the prisoner into the Muslim prayer position, even though such an act is totally inappropriate to the mission. The police cannot be wrong, therefore the state must be right. From this grossest of self-deceptions
arises the fanaticism that can destroy a nation.

The Meaning of the CIA's 3,000 Pages of Destroyed Interrogation Tapes

Obviously, the CIA could have "blurred" the face of the interrogator and shifted his voice (like you've seen on investigative tv shows like 60 Minutes) to protect the interrogator's identity. And since the CIA is not releasing the transcripts, it similarly could have refused to release the videos.

The fact that the CIA instead destroyed the videos shows that it has something to hide.
