What's Wrong With the U.S.?

Everyone seems to think health insurance is a cure all for the rising cost of medical care, but comprehensive health insurance is the cause of rising medical care costs. If you don't pay for the cost of medical services as you chose them, then there is a huge tendency to overuse medical services and to choose the most expensive means.

Media Bias About Guns

People are very surprised to learn that survey data show that guns are used defensively by private citizens in the U.S. anywhere from 1.5 to 3.4 million times a year. A question I hear repeatedly is: "If defensive gun use occurs so often, why haven’t I ever heard of even one story?"

NEWSWEEK: Recovery? What Recovery?

Don't tell me that the economy is getting better, or has even hit rock bottom. My faith in an imminent recovery deserted me on May 5, when one of our customers, Salyer American Foods, based in Monterey, Calif., suddenly fell into receivership. There had been little to no indication that the company was so close to financial ruin. As it turns out, the company's lenders say Salyer owes them over $34 million, a debt equal to almost half its sales. A company attorney told local media that tight credit markets and the economic recession had pushed Salyer over the edge. If the receiver doesn't find some way to revive the company's fortunes, our bag manufacturing company stands to lose nearly $1.5 million in revenue, about 2 percent of our $60 million in sales.

Webmaster's Commentary:

The economy is recovering if you happen to be getting taxpayer-funded bailouts, but for small businesses, things are bad and getting worse.

I have clients going out of business without being able to pay invoices, other clients insisting they have to have lower fees or cancel outright; a big project I was counting on for this year just lost their funding, etc. etc. etc.

I don't see any recovery. I see a lot of posturing and pretense.

Obama Readies Troops as Afghans Pile Up Body Parts

As rage spreads in Afghanistan after US bombing that killed up to 130 people, unnamed Pentagon officials are spinning another cover-up. Defiant Obama moves ahead with troop increase.

Webmaster's Commentary:

There will be a point in Afghanistan which will be the point of no return.

The possibility of a true military "victory" in this theatre does not exist. The old Soviet Union couldn't make that happen with over 500,000 pairs of boots on the ground.

When a guy can get up in the morning, go to work at decent wages, and he's able to take care of his family; when the kids are getting an education leading to a future where their dreams might be realized; when people's medical requirements can get taken care of; when there is a real participatory government without a whole lot of rampant, rancid corruption, is that guy suddenly going to pick up a gun, and start shooting governmental and military personnel?? Chances are, no.

When there is really a chance for people to do well, they are most generally going to want to go along with the process.

When that chance doesn't seem to exist, people become hopeless, and then angry, and then they become radicalized.

Obama ends well-liked program for border security

The SCAAP program reimburses states and counties for jailers' salaries for holding illegal immigrants who have at least one felony and two misdemeanor convictions. But the Obama administration says the reimbursements also can be used for bonuses, consultants and buying vehicles.

Webmaster's Commentary:

There would be a way to stop the flow of illegal immigration, if this was really a priority on the part of successive American governments.

However, this will not happen, because large corporations love the cheap labor made possible by illegal immigration.

The US should be charging foreign governments for the repatriation of all illegal immigrants. Should those governments balk, the US should delete the foreign aid given to that country by double that amount.

Legal immigration?!? Absolutely. Illegal immigration? No more; we just cannot afford it.

New York Charges Rent for Working Homeless

The new policy is based on a 1997 state law that was not enforced until last week, when shelter operators across the city began requiring residents to pay a certain portion of their income. The amount varies based on factors that include family size and what shelter is being used, but should not exceed 50 percent of a family’s income, a state official said.

Webmaster's Commentary:

These fees absolutely guarantee that the people using homeless shelters will never be able to get out of them.

Even though the city commissioner of homeless services made the statement "Our objective is to move families back into their own homes and into the community,” this practice will not give these people the ability to come up with the extra cash for a first, last, and deposit for a place of their own, and is disingenuous, to say the least. 24,700,000 Unemployed or Underemployed Americans: Job Losses Accelerate with 6 million unemployed over last year. Real Unemployment rate now at 15.8 Percent.

It is hard to believe what is taken as good news. 539,000 jobs were lost in April yet this was taken as a positive because it wasn’t 600,000. Forget about the fact that the revised number for March was moved upward to 699,000 from an initial 663,000. So it may be the case when the final number for April is calculated in June, we might have another 600,000 job loss month. There’s not much that’s funny about swine flu, but ultra-Orthodox Knesset member Ya’akov Litzman, acting head of Israel’s health ministry, has given us some comic relief. Repeatedly referring to the disease at a press conference April 27 as the “Mexican flu,” Litzman studiously avoided all mention of “swine” as if the very word were nonkosher, thereby causing much merriment in secular Israel. A newspaper cartoon showed him wearing a sombrero and serape and holding a bottle of tequila, while using one foot to kick aside a little piglet.

Do The Jews Own Hollywood And The Media?

Recently, when a caller to a talk show on the Genesis Radio Network suggested that the Jews control the media, the host went wild. He raged on and on, playing the race card. He branded the surprised caller and others like him who are weary of Zionist influence "Nazis" and "anti-Semites." Angrily, he denied Jewish involvement in any conspiracies and ridiculed those who had the audacity to suggest that Jews run Hollywood or the media. Then, in a real fit of spewed venom, the talk show host demanded that the caller and all others who believe like him should go out and hang themselves to promote population reduction.

Elie Wiesel Stole Book & Identity Says Survivor

Elie Wiesel claims to have authored "Un di velt hot geshvign," in Yiddish and published it in Buenos Aires in Dec. 1955. In 1958 he published a French edition paring the original down from 800 pages. In the Preface to a new edition, Wiesel confessed he had been able "to correct and revise a number of important details." In the first English translation he is said to be "almost fifteen," while in the new edition he is fifteen when he arrived at Auschwitz.

One French professor has remarked that "La Nuit" is totally different from anything else that Elie Wiesel has written" and speculates that Francois Mauriac wrote it.

Time To Stock Up the Bunker

In the 1950s and 1960s, bunkers were a feature of many American suburban homes, populated by families fearful of the prospect of nuclear war. That threat has subsided, but now many reasonable people are stocking up on essential supplies in preparation for a new cataclysm.

When you hear the word "survivalist", what image comes to mind?

Perhaps you think of a gun-toting loner in Mid-West America, who lives in a shack surrounded by tinned food and emergency water supplies.

Or maybe you think of end-of-the-world religionists retreating to a fortified camp with enough food and drink to last them until Judgement Day.

Torture is plain wrong

A decade ago, torture was understood to be such an unspeakably loathsome thing that merely possessing a depiction of an animal being tortured was made into a federal crime.

Now we find ourselves in the midst of a disgusting debate about whether it's acceptable, or, in the words of the Weekly Standard's Michael Goldfarb, "heroic," to actually torture human beings.

The debate is disgusting because arguing with someone about whether it's OK to torture people is like arguing about whether it's OK for a grown man to have sex with a 10-year-old child.

While in both cases one can give a long list of compelling reasons why it's not OK, in the end one is tempted to limit the response in such debates to seven words, to wit, "what the hell is wrong with you?"

We Need More Dick Cheney

Former Vice President Cheney (that “former” part never gets old, does it?) has some excellent advice for the Republicans: don’t moderate. Don’t stand for change. Defend the status quo. Stay the Bush-Cheney course.

Listen to former Vice President Cheney. Don’t come up with new ideas. Don’t move to the center as America shifts to the center-left. Don’t appeal to young voters—you only lost them by 34 points! Don’t appeal to Hispanics—you only lost them by 36 points! Don’t appeal to African-Americans—you only lost them by 90 points! Women? Who cares, you only lost them by 14 points.

To be sure, the leftward movement is not uniform nor is it permanent. I recall laughing in 2004 when Karl Rove spoke of a Republican majority that would last 60 years. Karl was off by about 58 years.

Democrats were routinely briefed on Bush ‘torture’ techniques, document shows

The document is explicit (PDF here). Most damningly, perhaps, is its description of a meeting held between CIA staff and then-House Intelligence Committee Chairman Porter Goss and now-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, which shows that Pelosi was briefed on the Bush Administration’s torture techniques in 2002 — even though she’s publicly said she was never told about the use of waterboarding.

Webmaster's Commentary:

This is why we will never see prosecution of anyone for war crimes; the Democrats are just as culpable as the Republicans in allowing the CIA to continue to torture.

And that's a damned shame.

Because until and unless these activities are investigated and prosecuted to the highest extent American law allows, this country will never again be able to represent itself as holding dear those values of human rights and human dignity, as embodied in the Constitution and Bill of Rights.

MPs claimed for everything but the cuddly toy

Two elephant lamps, a CD player, a yucca tree, a Dyson vacuum cleaner, an illuminated make-up mirror, a Zanussi oven.

It has everything apart from a cuddly toy. The conveyor belt of what MPs put on their expenses goes on and on ... a subscription to Sky, a granite worktop, a pizza wheel, a wine rack, a cordless hammer drill, an LG washing machine, an ice cube tray, and even a packet of Maltesers.

In the Generation Game, if contestants could remember the goodies on the conveyor belt they got to keep them. The only difference for MPs, it seems, is that they needed to remember to keep the receipt.

The Global Warming Hypothesis and Ocean Heat

Despite a consensus among scientists on the use of ocean heat as a robust metric for AGW, near-surface air temperature (referred to as “surface temperature”) is generally employed to gauge global warming. The media and popular culture have certainly equated the two. But this equation is not simply the product of a naïve misunderstanding. NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS), directed by James Hansen, and the British Hadley Centre for Climate Change, have consistently promoted the use of surface temperature as a metric for global warming. The highly publicized, monthly global surface temperature has become an icon of the AGW projections made by the IPCC.

Webmaster's Commentary:

The global warming cult likes to pick and choose the data which most supports their screed for a carbon-tax, but as this article points out, localized surface temperatures are not a reliable indicator of the total heat content of the environment.

It is argued that calculating the heat content for the entire ocean is a more reliable way to gauge global temperatures, presuming no major sob-oceanic volcanic eruptions.

The current global crisis is “vastly worse” than the 1930s because financial systems and economies worldwide have become more interdependent, “Black Swan” author Nassim Nicholas Taleb said.

Senate Will Move on Hate Crimes Bill; Critics Claim Bill Simply Unnecessary

Critics of the measure contend that, if the bill becomes law, it will force local and state law enforcement to prosecute and sentence individuals not only for the crimes they commit, but also for their beliefs—a slippery slope which will take the country down the road toward eventually criminalizing the thoughts of the American people.

Conservatives were quick to blast the bill for elevating a few in the eyes of the law.

AIG Misses Targets; Shares Slide

During the first quarter, the company continued to unwind its notorious financial products unit, widely considered one of the prime movers behind the financial crisis. Costs related to those actions contributed the most to AIG's loss in the just-ended quarter, the company said.

The New York-based insurer, which has remained in business only because of U.S. bailout money, reported a loss of $4.35 billion, or $1.98 a share, for the period ended March 31. That's narrower than the year-ago period, when AIG lost $7.81 billion, or $3.09 a share. And in the fourth quarter of 2008 AIG posted the biggest loss in corporate history: $61.7 billion.

Israel’s Bad-Faith Negotiating Position

Israel has set two conditions for new talks, both conflicting with U.S. policy. The first is Iran’s effective nuclear disarmament, which is impossible because of those Iranian facts on the ground, and because the U.S. has set itself against military action.

The second demand is also made for propaganda purposes, and is of transparent bad faith. It is that Israel be "recognized as a Jewish state" by all its interlocutors. This is impossible because Israel refuses to describe which "Israel" is to be recognized. The 1948 state recognized by the U.N.? Israel within the 1967 armistice borders (long ago violated by colonies and annexation of Palestinian lands)? Or an Israel with frontiers yet to be defined — since annexation and colonization continue today?

Government will backstop all funds for stress-test banks

Geithner said that the government will backstop the funds raised from private investors used to meet the cash requirements called for by the stress tests. So already, we know that the stress test procedure is not a free market procedure.

Moreover, Rose asked what would happen if a bank couldn't raise the required funds within 6 months. Geithner said that, in that case, the government would just give the funds to the bank.

So not only is the methodology for the stress tests a joke, but the procedure going forward is as well.

Those who criticize Israel or those who interrogate Zionism (the ism that gave birth to Israel) are often labeled “anti-Semitic” by the Zionist lobby. This lobby, a world-wide movement, is seen to be most influential in the United States where it vigorously defends the interests of Israel.

To view Israel unsympathetically means vilification by this group: it avows political critique is something that threatens the existence of all Jews. Yet, ironically, some of the most ardent critics of Israel have been Jews – academics and political liberals who have not denigrated their Jewishness in any way because of their conscience.

Iran invites Germans to participate in its oil, gas market

Iran has invited German companies and industries to participate in the country's gas and oil market, the official IRNA news agency reported on Wednesday.

Webmaster's Commentary:

So, sanctions against Iran demanded by Israel will result in Germany gaining access to Iran's oil?

Facebook urged to remove Holocaust-denial groups

"There is no First Amendment right to free speech in the private realm," Cuban said. "This isn't a freedom-of-speech issue. Facebook is free to set the standard that they wish."

Facebook spokesman Barry Schnitt said his company is in agreement with Cuban that the Holocaust-denial pages are offensive and objectionable.

Where the two sides part, Schnitt said, is whether people have the right to discuss such ideas on Facebook.

"It's a difficult decision to make. We have a lot of internal debate and we bring in experts to talk about it," Schnitt said. "Just being offensive or objectionable doesn't get it taken off Facebook. We want it [the site] to be a place where people can discuss all kinds of ideas, including controversial ones."

Webmaster's Commentary:

Interesting that Cuban acknowledges that Facebook as a right to set the standards they wish, then proceeds to tell them what that standard ought to be.

But Cuban is actually wrong. Newspapers and magazines and TV are private companies, yet the courts have consistently ruled that First Amendment protections of free speech apply to them.

I write to you as a Jewish woman who is both American and Israeli. I have lived in Israel for over 50 years, and I can tell you that I have had enough of wars and insecurity.

America keeps on sending us billions of dollars in weapons every year. And yet, Israel has become the least safe country for Jews to live in (except for war zones such as Afghanistan, where no one is safe).

FLASHBACK - Torture was taught by CIA; Declassified manual details the methods used in Honduras; Agency denials refuted

The 1983 manual was altered between 1984 and early 1985 to discourage torture after a furor was raised in Congress and the press about CIA training techniques being used in Central America. Those alterations and new instructions appear in the documents obtained by The Sun, support the conclusion that methods taught in the earlier version were illegal.

cia torture manual circa 1983

The Sun’s story noted the admonition on page 46 of the 1963 manual that when planning an interrogation room, “the electric current should be known in advance, so that transformers or other modifying devices will be on hand if needed.” The Sun reported that “...this referred to the application of electric shocks to interrogation suspects.”

FLASDHBACK - School of the Americas CIA Torture Manual

Manuals used by the U.S. Army's School of the Americas between 1982 and 1991 appeared to condone executions, beatings and other human rights abuses, the Pentagon said in a disclosure that prompted renewed calls for the school's closure.

The Pentagon on Friday disclosed English translations of portions of seven training manuals it said were pulled from use in 1991 by then-Defense Secretary Dick Cheney. He determined that the language violated U.S. policy.

Webmaster's Commentary:

So, back in 1996, Cheney was OPPOSED to torture?

May 08 09:55

Why torture questions must be answered

The idea that our country does not torture is based on World War II policies, but since 1950 the CIA has been studying torture techniques and has been exporting its knowledge abroad through the Office of Public Safety and the School of the Americas. However, torture was not our official policy, until the George W. Bush administration.

A Timeline of CIA Atrocities

Operation MOCKINGBIRD — The CIA begins recruiting American news organizations and journalists to become spies and disseminators of propaganda. The effort is headed by Frank Wisner, Allan Dulles, Richard Helms and Philip Graham. Graham is publisher of The Washington Post, which becomes a major CIA player. Eventually, the CIA?s media assets will include ABC, NBC, CBS, Time, Newsweek, Associated Press, United Press International, Reuters, Hearst Newspapers, Scripps-Howard, Copley News Service and more. By the CIA?s own admission, at least 25 organizations and 400 journalists will become CIA assets.

UN Treaties Fail to Respect American Sovereignty and the Constitution

No one in government has been more consistent in their position regarding the UN and its continued threat to American sovereignty than Congressman Ron Paul. On February 24, he reintroduced H.R. 1146, the American Sovereignty Restoration Act. If passed, it would effectively pull the U.S. out of the UN. Membership in the UN only serves to undermine American sovereignty. The UN is guilty of dictating environmental, labor, trade, gun and health laws. Through its system of international treaties, the U.S. finds itself increasingly bound by UN agreements.
