Anonymous Fear-Mongering About the Patriot Act From the White House and NYT

everal of the most extremist provisions of the 2001 Patriot Act are going to expire on June 1 unless Congress reauthorizes them in some form. Obama officials such as Director of National Intelligence James Clapper and new Attorney General Loretta Lynch have been engaged in rank fear-mongering to coerce renewal, warning that we’ll all be “less safe” if these provisions are allowed to “sunset” as originally intended, while invoking classic Cheneyite rhetoric by saying Patriot Act opponents will bear the blame for the next attack. In an interview yesterday with the Intercept, ACLU Deputy Legal Director Jameel Jaffer explained why those scare tactics are outright frivolous.

Is the TPP Okay With Slavery? Really?

So the fast track plan to pass the Trans-Pacific Partnership has run into a new wrinkle after an amendment passed in the Senate debate: slavery. Yes, really, slavery: the Senate voted for an amendment that would make it more difficult for countries that engage in slavery to be in the TPP, and the Obama administration objected. This is bizarre stuff, folks, but welcome to the world of international trade deals. From Ryan Grim's article the day Fast Track was passed, about the amendment in question:

That measure would bar governments considered to be complicit in human trafficking from receiving the economic benefits of a fast-tracked trade deal. Menendez, the author of the provision, has described it as a human rights protection that will prevent U.S. workers from competing with modern-day slave labor.

Fury after primary pupils are asked to complete radicalisation-seeking surveys

Parents of children as young as nine have reacted angrily after schools in an east London borough asked pupils to complete surveys designed to provide clues to possible radicalisation. Waltham Forest council has been piloting the scheme in five primary schools with large Muslim intakes. The questionnaire, circulated among year 6 pupils, asks how much they trust the police and people from another race or religion.

They are also asked whether they agree that it is acceptable to marry someone from outside their race or religion and whether women are just as good as men at work. Another question asks if the pupils believe their religion is the only correct one. About 22% of the population in Waltham Forest, one of the most deprived local authorities in England, are Muslim.

Webmaster's Commentary:

A short memo to the Ministry of Education in the UK: this is not rocket science, and you are looking in absolutely the wrong direction here.

What causes radicalisation is realizing that a foreign country is taking advantage of natural resources in a country, to which the invading country has absolutely no moral right.

What causes radicalization is watching a relative, a toddler, get blown to bits by a drone bombing, and understanding that this dead, innocent child is considered simply "collateral damage" by the government doing the drone bombing.

What causes radicalization is not being able to peacefully advocate for change, because the government in power (let's say in Bahrain) is supported by both the British and US governments, where the Bahraini government will have your tear gassed or hit with rubber bullets for your efforts; then, the first responders who tried to keep you from dying are tortured into confessing, and also jailed.

The late President Kennedy said it best: "When peaceful revolution is impossible, violent revolution is inevitable."

N.J. Child Services Case Highlights Why Every Citizen Needs to Know Their Rights

A particularly disturbing case coming out of the Garden State highlights the absolute necessity for every American citizen to explicitly know their God-given rights enshrined in the United States Declaration of Independence, Constitution, and Bill of Rights, as well as their state constitution. If the New Jersey parents who were confronted by an aggressive and rude child services employee had known their rights, they never would have been subjected to the police state tactics employed by the state worker and would have been confident standing their ground refusing her entry.

FLASHBACK - Why Isn't Wall Street in Jail?

Over drinks at a bar on a dreary, snowy night in Washington this past month, a former Senate investigator laughed as he polished off his beer.

"Everything's fucked up, and nobody goes to jail," he said. "That's your whole story right there. Hell, you don't even have to write the rest of it. Just write that."

I put down my notebook. "Just that?"

"That's right," he said, signaling to the waitress for the check. "Everything's fucked up, and nobody goes to jail. You can end the piece right there."

Don’t hold your breath for Millennials to purchase homes: 6 years into a recovery and Millennials are still moving into parental homes at record levels.

I ran into a successful Millennial couple this month and we had a good discussion about housing. They are in their 30s and still do not have any kids. Both are career driven and ultimately would like to buy a home. They have the money to buy but just don’t want to. What they brought up was interesting and they mentioned some of their peers had to resort to moving back in with mom and dad. What they brought up simply reflects a “new normal” for Millennials and that is many are simply not eager to purchase a home. Many are delaying marriage, have smaller families (if any), and a large number are carrying sizable student debt. All of this has caused a low demand for housing and alternative choices to buying a home especially for this cohort of Americans. In California we have a high number of adults living at home largely because of the cost of rents and home prices. Yet this trend encompasses the entire country. Higher home prices and rents have only exacerbated this movement.

JEWISH MORAL FAILURE EXTRAORDINAIRE

I, like many others, read the Forward’s report on the website Canary Mission today — and shuddered.

This organization documents, on its website, the names and photographs of pro-Palestinian activists around the country with links to their personal details, social media profiles, and print-out profiles for activists. The database, as stated on the webpage, “was created to expose individuals and groups that are anti-Freedom, anti-American and anti-Semitic in order to protect the public and our democratic values.” Organizers are not listed, but the public is invited to submit “a sourced profile of someone involved in anti-Semitic and/or anti-Israel activities” for [anonymous] publication. Mondoweiss and Jewish Voice for Peace are listed as equivalent to Hamas; many students’ LinkedIn profiles are attached in a probable effort to prevent their employment.

So what do we make of a website that has literally created a publically available BDS blacklist?

Wrongfully treating academic debate as anti-Semitism

The principle of academic freedom at our universities is under attack by those seeking to shield Israel from criticism by silencing dissent, shutting down discussion and imposing a stifling atmosphere of intimidation at the University of California, in particular.

A coordinated set of petitions, including a letter signed by 57 rabbis, asks UC administrators to adopt the State Department's definition of anti-Semitism as a means to "accurately identify" and "publicly condemn" it in campus debate, protest and discussion. That problematic definition conflates principled criticism of Israeli policies with genuine anti-Semitism; if the university accedes to this demand, such criticism — and academic freedom — could be suppressed by administrative fiat.

Kiev Regime Represses Anti-Fascism in Odessa

There is a common misconception in the West that there is only one war in Ukraine: a war between the anti-Kiev rebels of the East, and the US-backed government in Kiev. While this conflict, with all its attendant geopolitical and strategic implications has stolen the majority of the headlines, there is another war raging in the country – a war to crush all dissent and opposition to the fascist-oligarch consensus. For while in the West many so called analysts and leftists debate whether there is really fascism in Ukraine or whether it’s all just “Russian propaganda,” a brutal war of political repression is taking place.

U.S. Burned by NAFTA, Yet our Leaders Ask Us To Trust Them Again

The North American Free Trade Agreement has been nothing but a disaster for the U.S. Just by taking a look at the auto industry, we see how thousands, if not millions, of auto jobs have been shipped down south. Here in the U.S., the lowest paid autoworkers make $38 an hour with benefits. That is roughly four more times than the average auto worker in Mexico. It is no wonder that Mexico is the most attractive place in North America to build auto factories.

In addition, within the past two years, a whopping 8 automakers have opened plants and expansions in Mexico. Those are jobs that could've supported thousands of families here in the U.S. We were told time after time that NAFTA was going to be amazing for America.

Biotech shills posing as economists try to boost GMO sales by proposing subsidies for junk food and taxes for organic food

As reported by The Daily Caller, economists who are allegedly "environmentally savvy" are suggesting that growers of organic foods in the state be taxed, as if that will solve the water crisis.

According to this line of thinking, organic farms are not as efficient with their use of water as "conventional" (as in, GMO-producing) farms, say economists with the Property and Environment Research Center and the Hoover Institution. These economists say that pricing that "inefficiency" into organic products will lead consumers will use less of them.

In other words, they propose punishing people who want a healthier choice of foods and products as well as the growers who provide them.

The tribunal’s rationale is that “full disclosure of the document would have ‘an adverse effect on relations’ with Bahrain, where the U.K. is keen to build further economic and defence ties.” In other words, disclosing these facts would make the British and/or the Bahrainis look bad, cause them embarrassment, and could make their close friendship more difficult to sustain. Therefore, the British and Bahraini populations must be denied access to the evidence of what their governments did.

Letting corporations sue governments protecting the environment is no way to solve the water crisis

Salvadorans are currently awaiting a ruling in a six-year legal battle initiated by Vancouver-based mining company Pacific Rim and now pursued by the Canadian-Australian firm Oceana Gold, which acquired Pacific Rim in 2013. In spite of the fact that Pacific Rim had failed to meet Salvadoran regulatory requirements, the company is suing El Salvador for USD $301 million for not having granted them a permit to operate a gold mine. The case is being heard at the World Bank's International Center for the Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID), which exists outside of national jurisdiction. Its mandate is to examine the rights of foreign investors without taking into consideration domestic human rights, labour and environmental laws.

Judge Who Blocked Release of Osama bin Laden Death Photos Now Blocks Release of US Senate Torture Report

A federal judge has thwarted an attempt to force the release of the Senate report on the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) torture program.

But U.S. District Court Judge James Boasberg rejected the ACLU’s request, ruling the report remains a congressional record and thus isn’t subject to the FOIA. When Congress created FOIA in 1966, it made sure to exempt the legislative branch from its provisions.

Here are the 10 most absurd reasons why small children have been arrested in America

At this point, it’s hard to be surprised by the extreme punitiveness of America’s criminal justice system. One thing that can still shock, though, is how police manhandle actual children. Not only is treatment of children severe (police in Arizona recently mulled over the possibility of charging an 8-year-old as an adult), but our system is undiscerning; we can, and do, arrest kids for virtually anything, including completely normal childhood misbehavior. In fact, many youth, particularly people of color from low-income households, come into contact with their first handcuffs in school. Here are some of the stranger examples of this depressingly American practice.

How Corporate Sovereignty Undermines Democracy By Irrevocably Binding Future Governments

Techdirt has been at the forefront of pointing out the dangers of including investor-state dispute settlement (ISDS) in so-called trade agreements. Indeed, we even helped come up with a new term -- corporate sovereignty -- to make clear that ISDS is really about placing corporations on the same level as entire nations, and giving them a unique power to sue a country for alleged harms before special tribunals. But there's an additional aspect to this, which is explored in an insightful article by Sam Fowles on The Conversation.

He points out that although we don't know in detail what the US-EU TAFTA/TTIP agreement will contain, we do have the text for the one between Canada and the EU, the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (pdf), known as CETA. The European Commission has said many times that it aims to build on the corporate sovereignty chapter in CETA when it comes to negotiating TTIP.

Swedish Politician: US is the True Cause of the Masses of Refugees from the Middle East; Al Qaeda and ISIS Created, Funded, Trained and Armed By the CIA

'Pay to stay': Inmates across U.S. charged for their own incarceration

Nearly every state lets prisons and jails charge inmates for their own incarceration — room, board, clothing, and doctor's visits — in a phenomenon called "pay to stay." We don't know exactly how many prisons and jails take advantage of "pay to stay." The latest survey, in 2005, found that 90 percent of jails surveyed charged inmates fees of one kind of another. In an era of tight budgets, the practice is probably even more widespread today.
