People of Hamo and Kherbet al-Asa’ad villages and army personnel intercept US occupation convoy in Hasaka

The people of Hamo village in the countryside of Qamishli and members of the Syrian Arab Army intercepted a US occupation forces convoy that had attempted to pass through the village, forcing it to retreat.

Local sources at the village told SANA’s reporter said a convoy of 5 US occupation vehicles was heading to Hamo village, but it was forced to retreat when locals gathered at a Syrian Arab Army checkpoint near the village and prevented the convoy from passing with the help of the army personnel.

The people of Kherbet al-Asa’ad village and members of the Syrian Arab Army intercepted another US occupation forces convoy which was consisted of 3 US occupation armored vehicles and a number of cares affiliated to the Militias of “Qasd,” and forced them to retreat.

U.S. officer killed in ambush in eastern Syria: SANA

A U.S. officer, along with two Kurdish fighters, was killed on Monday in an ambush in Syria's eastern province of Deir al-Zour, state news agency SANA reported.

The ambush, carried out by an unknown group, targeted vehicles of the U.S.-led coalition and fighters of the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces in the village of Sur in Deir al-Zour's countryside.

The slain U.S. officer was transported to the Shaddadi base, which is run by the U.S. forces, in the southern countryside of the northeastern province of Hasakah, SANA said, providing no further details.

The U.S. forces and Kurdish-led fighters control areas in Deir al-Zour and Hasakah after dislodging Islamic State (IS) militants in battles in 2018.

American Officer, Two Members of SDF Killed in Ambush in Syria's Deir ez-Zor - Syrian State Media

Earlier, Kurdish media reported that Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and the US-sponsored international coalition had redeployed their troops to the Syrian cities of Al-Hasakah, Qamishli, Al-Malikiyah and Deir ez-Zor to "protect oil fields and fight sleeper cells" said to belong to Daesh*.

An American officer and two SDF members were killed in the town of Al-Sur in the Deir ez-Zor countryside after an ambush was carried out by unknown persons, according to state-run news agency SANA. The attack was organised against a joint patrol of "American occupation forces" and the SDF group near the village of Wasiah, according to SANA.

US military dispatches 35 trucks to oil-rich northeastern Syria: SANA

Syrian media say the United States has dispatched truckloads of military and logistical equipment to the country's northeastern province of Hasakah as Washington and some of its regional allies keep vying with one another to seize oil reserves and plunder natural resources in the war-battered country.

Local sources, speaking on condition of anonymity, told Syria’s official news agency SANA that a convoy of 35 trucks crossed the Waleed border crossing on Monday and headed toward US positions in the Jazira region of the province.

The sources added that the majority of the equipment was sent to a base that American troops have set up at Kharab al-Jeer Airport in al-Malikiyah district.

US-led coalition airdrops military equipment to Syria's biggest oil field: Report

he so-called US-led military coalition purportedly formed to fight the Daesh Takfiri terrorist group has reportedly airdropped military and logistical equipment to oil-rich areas it has occupied in Syria’s eastern province of Dayr al-Zawr, as Washington and some of its regional allies vie to seize oil reserves and plunder natural resources in the war-battered country.

The Arabic-language Enab Baladi weekly newspaper, citing a video published by the local North Press news agency, reported that a military transport aircraft offloaded its cargo near al-Omar oil field in the eastern countryside of Dayr al-Zawr.

The report noted that the operation took place late on Saturday.

Which target after Syria?

Events in the "Broader Middle East" since 2001 have followed a relentless logic. The current question is whether the time has come for a new war in Turkey or Saudi Arabia. The answer depends in particular on the resumption of hostilities in Libya. It is in this context that the Additional Protocol negotiated by Presidents Erdo?an and Putin to resolve the Idleb crisis must be interpreted.

Syria air defences down Israeli missiles over Homs: state media

Syrian air defences intercepted several Israeli missiles fired at targets in the centre of the war-torn country late on Tuesday, according to Syrian state media.

"The air defences shot down a number of missiles before they reached their targets," official news agency SANA reported on Tuesday, without identifying the targets in Homs province.

America, We Have To End the Wars Now

Can anyone think what our society might have spent six and a half trillion dollars on instead of 20 years of war in the Middle East for nothing? How about the trillion dollars per year we keep spending on the military on top of that?

Invading, dominating and remaking the Arab world to serve the interests of the American empire and the state of Greater Israel sounds downright quaint at this point. Iraq War II, as Senator Bernie Sanders said in the debate a few weeks ago, while letting Joe Biden, one of its primary proponents, off the hook for it, was “a long time ago.” Actually, Senator, we still have troops there fighting Iraq War III 1/2 against what’s left of the ISIS insurgency, and our current government continues to threaten the launch of Iraq War IV against the very parties we fought the last two wars for. This would almost certainly then lead to war with Iran.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Doing things in precisely the same way, over and over and over again, yet expecting a different outcome, is one of the classic definitions of insanity.

SYRIA AND TURKEY RAMP UP PREPARATIONS FOR NEW MILITARY CONFRONTATION

The Syrian Army and Iranian-backed militias deployed a new batch of reinforcements to the frontline in southern Idlib and western Aleppo. According to local sources, fresh troops reinforced by armoured vehicles and battle tanks were placed near Saraqib, Kafranbel, and Urma as-Sughra. These areas were the hottest points of the conflict between Syrian troops and Turkish-led forces during the previous round of escalations in Greater Idlib. Turkey and its proxies are also preparing for a new round of confrontations.

During the past week, at least four Turkish military convoys, with battle tanks and even MIM-23 Hawk medium-range air-defense systems, entered Idlib, allegedly to secure the ceasefire regime and contain the terrorist threat. How Turkish troops are planning to use air defense systems against al-Qaeda terrorists that do not have aircraft remains a mystery.

US Plans to Transfer Cargo to Syrian Militants Disguised as Aid for Refugees - Russian Military

he Rukban camp, which houses up to 25,000 refugees is located in the US-controlled zone around its unauthorised military base at Al-Tanf, making it almost impossible for humanitarian workers to access the area.

"The American side cynically seeks to take advantage of the situation concerning the spread of the coronavirus and is putting pressure on the UN leadership to bring 'humanitarian aid' to the Rukban refugee camp under the guise of diagnostic tools to feed controlled militants", the interagency coordinating headquarters of Russia and Syria said in a joint statement on Saturday.

The military stressed that the disastrous situation in the camp is a result of the illegal occupation of the area by American forces, noting that the refugees should be returned to their homes in the territory under the control of the Syrian government.

Webmaster's Commentary:

I would very much like to ask some Foggy Bottomites, very quietly and logically, what the hell we are doing in Syria, when we cannot save our own people from Covid 19?!?

In what collective, twisted minds in the Bowels of Power in this country, does this even make sense?!?

Let me tell you; it makes sense to all those corporations comprising the US military industrial complex, who overtly and covertly contribute to the campaign coffers of those who allegedly represent the interests of the American people.

Video: Mighty “Moderate Rebels” Pressure Turkish Army in Idlib. US-led Coalition Is Crumbling

The notorious “moderate rebels” have blown up a bridge on the M4 highway in southern Idlib as part of their effort to sabotage the creation of a security zone in the area. The Kafr bridge is located near the town of Jisr al-Shughr, near positions of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham and the Turkistan Islamic Party, both of which are linked to al-Qaeda. Surprisingly, pro-opposition sources publicly admit that the bridge was destroyed to hinder Russian-Turkish plans to conduct joint patrols along the M4. After previous acts of sabotage against the deal, supporters of the Idlib “moderates” opted to blame “Russian barbarians”, “sectarian Iranian militias” or the “puppet Assad regime”. But such claims did not hold water because the rough actions of the Idlib militants were too obvious.

White Helmets use Covid-19 crisis to further US Coalition regime change agenda in Syria

The White Helmet ‘coronavirus campaign’ is a cynical exploitation of the pandemic to weaponize it against the Syrian government. To really help the Syrians they should demand a lift of Western sanctions, not support them.

Five cases of coronavirus have now been reported by the health ministry in Syria. The country is subject to a curfew from 6pm to 6am as of March 25. Syria braces itself for a potential medical crisis.

The Syrian healthcare sector has been crippled under a “maximum pressure” economic sanctions campaign that has collectively punished the Syrian people for the duration of a war waged against them by the same governments inflicting the catastrophic economic damage. Hospitals and medical care centers have been targeted and occupied by the extremist armed groups throughout Syria, further reducing the Syrian state-ability to deal with the looming threat of an apparently rapacious pandemic.

UNFORTUNATE ADVENTURES OF TURKISH ARMY IN IDLIB

Two Turkish soldiers were injured and two vehicles damaged in Syria’s southern Idlib on March 24. Their military convoy was targeted by a roadside bomb explosion near the village of Sfuhun. Turkish troops based at the al-Barah observation post were conducting a patrol along the contact line between the Syrian Army and Idlib armed groups.

This became the second attack on Turkish forces in Greater Idlib in less than 7 days. On March 19, two Turkish soldiers were killed and several others injured, when an IED exploded near their convoy near the village of Muhamabal.

Air Defence System Intercepts Drone Near Hmeimim Air Base - Syrian State Media

On 19 February, Syrian state media reported that the nation's air defences had repelled an attack by "hostile objects" on the suburbs of the city of Jableh, located on the Mediterranean coast in the vicinity of the Hmeimim air base, where the Russian Aerospace Forces are stationed.

The Syrian air defence system on Monday intercepted a drone in the vicinity of Jableh city in the Lattakia countryside near the Hmeimim base where Russian Aerospace Forces are stationed, according to the Syrian state news outlet Sana.

According to the report, the attacking drone, which approached the area late on Monday night, was destroyed before harming the military facility. A large explosion was heard in Latakia, according to local media.

Video: ISIS Threat Revives in Eastern Syria. Idlib Militants Kill Each Other Over Security Zone Deal Contradictions

ISIS cells are once again active in eastern Syria. Late on March 17, the Syrian Army and the National Defense Forces repelled an ISIS attack in the area between the town of al-Sukhna and the T3 station. The attack involved over two dozen ISIS members supported by at least 6 vehicles equipped with heavy weapons. Pro-opposition sources claim that at least 20 Syrian soldiers were killed in the clashes. Pro-government sources deny casualties and say that terrorists were forced to retreat after they had been targeted by artillery and mortar fire.

The ISIS presence in the desert area of eastern Syria had been slowly decreasing over the past year. Additionally, government forces carried out several security operations cracking down on the remaining ISIS cells in southeastern Deir Ezzor and eastern Homs. However, the terrorist threat was not removed. Syria and Russia say that ISIS members use the US-controlled zone of al-Tanf as a safe haven to hide from Syrian Army operations.

Irritated by Russia-Turkey Idlib Deal, US Ready to Undermine Syrian Settlement - Moscow

On 5 March, Moscow and Ankara clinched a ceasefire deal to stop an ongoing escalation between Turkish and Syrian forces in Idlib Province, and to establish joint military patrols in the area.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova told reporters on Friday that the US, which is frustrated over the Moscow-Ankara accord on the Idlib settlement, uses any pretext to promote anti-Russian hysteria.

She said that the Ministry has paid attention to “the intensification of contacts between American politicians and the quasi-humanitarian organisation White Helmets operating in Syria”.

“Such contacts usually end up with big problems in the region in the form of provocations and provocative actions. On 17 March, US Deputy Secretary of State Stephen Biegun met the White Helmets leader despite restrictions on contacts with foreigners introduced by the State Department in connection with the spread of the coronavirus", Zakharova said.

U.S. FORCES WITHDRAW FROM KEY BASE NEAR SYRIAN BORDER. MORE ROCKET ATTACKS ON US TARGETS IN IRAQ

Late on March 17, at least three rockets struck the area near the US embassy in Baghdad’s fortified Green Zone. This was the fourth such attack in the span of a week. A day earlier, a pair of rockets struck the Besmaya base south of Baghdad. This military facility is the second largest military base operated by the US-led coalition in Iraq after Camp Taji.

The threat of rocket attacks already forced the US military to announce that it is evacuating some of its bases in the country. The al-Qaim base, near the Syrian-Iraqi border, is among them. The al-Qaim facility has been an important logistical and operational hub employed by US forces for operations in western Iraq and eastern Syria. Its presence there, as well as in Syria’s al-Tanf, has allowed the US to project its power along the Syrian-Iraqi border more effectively and to support Israeli military actions against Iranian-backed forces in the area.

As Coronvirus Grips the US, Americans Get a Taste of Life Under Sanctions

The crippling shortages, inability to move and the likely overwhelming of medical services will give Americans a taste of what it is like to live under sanctions that it imposes on a number of countries worldwide. U.S. sanctions on Venezuela, declared illegal and a “crime against humanity” by the United Nations, are conservatively estimated to have killed more than 40,000 people between 2017 and 2018 alone. Diabetics, for example, have been unable to get insulin because of the embargo, leading to mass deaths. The Cuban government estimates that the American embargo has cost it over $750 billion. Meanwhile, Iran, wracked by the virus that has caused more than 850 confirmed deaths, has been decimated by Trump’s increased sanctions.

MAJOR: Syrian Army Uncovers Terrorist Chemical Weapons Workshop In Western Aleppo

Syrian government forces have discovered a workshop in the western countryside of the country’s embattled northwestern province of Aleppo, where foreign-backed terrorists used to manufacture toxic chemical weapons for their attacks against army troops and civilians in government-controlled areas.

Syrian forces have found more than solid evidence of the manufacture and use of chemical weapons by the foreign-backed terrorist groups. Use of chemical weapons is strongly encouraged by terrorists’ foreign backers (primarily NATO and Wahhabi monarchies), as it serves two purposes:

US now openly admits its goal in Syria is to make it 'difficult' for Moscow and Damascus to defeat terrorists

The State Department’s special envoy for Syria has just admitted that the US aims to defend jihadist militants in Idlib against ‘Russian aggression,’ proving once again that the swamp in Foggy Bottom is alive and well.
Russia and the Syrian government “are out to get a military victory in all of Syria,” Ambassador James Jeffrey told reporters on a conference call out of Brussels on Tuesday.

Our goal is to make it very difficult for them to do that by a variety of diplomatic, military, and other actions.

To illustrate these methods, Jeffrey cited the US threat to respond “in a very savage military way” against any chemical attacks, which he described as “a favorite tactic of the Syrian regime in making advances.” This is factually untrue, since the alleged attacks always happen after Syrian Army victories, as a pretext for US intervention.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Hearing the consistent hissings of US government lying is enough to make me physically ill; but Jeffries is near the competitive "gold" for describing the reality that the US hires, trains, arms, and funds terrorists, to keep the Russians and Syrian government from winning this war.

I would like to politely remind him, that payback for this kind of public lying, and the actions it can attempt to justify, can be a real bear.

US-Israel Predictably Behind Turkish Aggression in Syria

Turkey’s ongoing fighting in northern Syria’s Idlib governorate was – from the beginning of recent escalations – clearly a continuation of Washington’s wider now 9 year-long proxy war against Damascus.

Whatever gains Turkey had made in terms of reducing its role in Washington’s proxy war and repairing ties with Syria’s allies Russia and Iran – were clearly less important to Ankara amid these recent weeks of renewed aggression than whatever Washington has either promised Anakara or threatened it with.

And precisely because Turkey’s aggression in Idlib is merely one part of the much wider proxy war Washington continues to wage against Damascus – it was predicted that others involved in the proxy war would coordinate with Turkey elsewhere in Syria.

1983 CIA Document Reveals Plan to Destroy Syria, Foreshadows Current Crisis

As the Syrian crisis enters its ninth year, the Donald Trump administration is looking more and more like the Obama administration every day. With the Trump regime refusing to open useful dialogue with Russia regarding Syria, it’s obvious anti-Iran and pro-Israel positioning, and support for a very questionable “safe zone” plan for Syria, the odds of a rational U.S. policy in regards to Syria has lower and lower odds of existence as time progresses.

***

Yet, despite the fact that the Trump administration is apparently poised to continue the Obama regime’s proxy war of aggression against the people of Syria, an example of seamless transition, it should also be remembered that the plan to destroy Syria did not begin with Obama but with the Bush administration.

US Urges NATO Allies to Provide Turkey Military Aid in Syria

US special envoy for Syria James Jeffrey says the US is in talks with various NATO allies for providing more direct military aid to Turkey for the sake of the war in Syria. The US wants other nations to do more in the Syria conflict.

Jeffrey says “everything is on the table,” but it does not seem like the US will be offering much direct aid beyond ammunition. The US is conditioning Patriot missiles for the Syria War on Turkey not activating its S-400 air defenses.

Jeffrey also ruled out the use of US troops in Idlib if the ceasefire collapses. With the ceasefire still holding, the US calls for NATO involvement are likely not being viewed as high priority, but reflective of the US not liking the ceasefire.

US Nukes Reportedly Delivered To Poland

In order to prevent the conflict in the region to be nuclear, USA decided to take the nukes out of Turkey. The fact of taking the ammunition out of the country was widely discussed in Turkish media.

The media informed that five C-17A Globemasters III arrived to Incerlik AB from Ramstein Air Base and took the whole bulk of nukes out to Germany, Poland and one of the Baltic States.

An official in the Air Mobility Command who wished to remain anonymous said that the nuclear ammunition had already been delivered to Powidz, Poland in early March 2020.

In this way the tensions are to rise in Europe: the biggest US maneuvers in Europe, more nukes– that can provoke reactions from Russia.

Moscow has already warned that Russian government would take responsive measures to an upcoming, massive U.S. military deployment and U.S.-led exercises across multiple European states bordering Russia.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Unfortunately, just because something is the most pig-headedly, ham-fistedly stupid thing the US government could ever do, is no guarantee that it will not do just that, which is one of the most frightening aspects of US foreign policy; and right now, looking at the Turkish and Russian positions in Syria, this could potentially devolve into all-out war, as both Turkey and the US are sister NATO countries, and the US (and Israel) want Al Assad's government crushed to smithereens in Damascus.

All-star warmonger Lindsey Graham urges NATO to ‘get more involved’ in Idlib, Syria to stop ‘Syrian aggression’

Veteran chickenhawk Lindsey Graham once again beat his over-used war drum, this time because he wants NATO to get involved in Idlib, Syria to stop “Syrian aggression.” Yes, when will Syria stop intervening in its own country?

The South Carolina senator said that he fully supports US President Donald Trump’s efforts to “get NATO more involved in Syria,” arguing that the defensive alliance should aid Turkey as it “defends Idlib against Russian/Syrian aggression.” He further argued that the “fall” of Idlib would result in a humanitarian crisis felt around the world, which is why NATO should be more “supportive” of its Turkish ally.

The senior statesman apparently doesn’t seem particularly fazed by the fact that Idlib is part of Syria – making accusations of “Syrian aggression” slightly nonsensical. The province is now home to the last bastion of extremist jihadist militias, some of which are directly affiliated with Al-Qaeda.

Greece’s Migrant Crisis Has Further Exposed Turkish Fake News

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdo?an’s attempt to intimidate the Syrian Army and force them to withdraw to the Sochi Agreement lines in Idlib utterly failed, resulting in the Turkish leader having to embarrassingly accept large swathes of liberated territory will remain under Syrian sovereignty despite his attempts to occupy it. This was especially embarrassing as Erdo?an’s end of February ultimatum came and went with no grand Turkish military offensive to push back the Syrian Army as he had promised. This embarrassment comes as Erdo?an’s approval has reached as low as 41.1% according to data published by the Ankara-based pollster MetroPoll last Friday. As Erdo?an’s foreign policy is largely driven by a desire for a neo-Ottoman ambitions and to serve as a distraction from Turkey’s currency nosedive, he was quick to create issues against the “Old Enemy,” Greece.

BREAKING: US Envoy to Syria: If Moscow, Damascus Violate Idlib Ceasefire, Washington, European Allies Will Respond, Possibly With Sanctions

An almost decade-long war armed conflict in Syria is drawing to a close, with the northwesten Idlib province being the last major bastion held the rebels. Fighting there escalated in recent weeks after Turkey, a NATO member, intervened in the region to slow Bashar al-Assad's advance.

The United States would respond with unspecified measures and sanctions if Russia or Syria violated the recently-agreed ceasefire in Idlib, James Franklin Jeffrey, the US special envoy for Syria, told reporters in Brussels on Tuesday.

The envoy did not elaborate on whether any action would be taken if Turkey is the side that breaks the ceasefire deal.

He did not rule out assisting Turkey in Idlib within NATO framework, including supplying missile defence systems.

“We are looking what NATO can do, all options on the table,” Jeffrey replied when asked whether the US was considering supplying the Patriot systems.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Envoy Jeffrey, I am having a palm to forehead moment, upon reading this, at warp speed.

However, the pause in the Turkish-Syrian military confrontation just reduced the tensions rather than put an end to them.

A few minutes after the start of the ceasefire agreed by Turkish and Russian presidents in Moscow, an intense fighting erupted between Hayat Tahrir al-Sham and pro-government forces. ‘Democratic al-Qaeda rebels’ attacked positions of regime troops near Fleifel, Sufuhon and Fatterah. Current Conflict In Syria Is Nothing New — Plan Goes Back To 1983

By Brandon Turbeville

While the majority of Americans have been focused on the spread of COVID-19, they may have missed the fact that Turkey has all but declared a war and invaded Syria. After having dispatched troops to the terrorist haven of Idlib, Syria as the Syrian military engaged in a massive push to liberate the region. Turkey has since come to the rescue of the embattled terrorists, launching drone attacks, airstrikes, and ground forces into Syrian territory.

Turkey established a number of “observation points,” that the Syrian military, during the process of liberation early on in the Battle of Idlib, surrounded. The Syrian military did not disturb these posts or harm any Turkish soldiers...

US ‘BLOCKS’ UN from supporting Russian-Turkish ceasefire in Syria’s Idlib

US opposition reportedly blocked the UN Security Council from backing the agreement between Russia and Turkey for a ceasefire in Syria’s Idlib province. US diplomats earlier sought to back Turkey’s incursion in the area.

Friday’s meeting was requested by Russia, after President Vladimir Putin and his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan hammered out a ceasefire after a six-hour meeting in Moscow the day before.

However, “one of the parties” blocked the Security Council statement that would have expressed support for the agreement, Russian envoy to the UN Vassily Nebenzia said.

Turkey Is Forcibly Transporting Migrants to the Greek Border, Pushing Them Across

Editor’s note: Has graduated from simply luring the migrants to the Greek border, and helping them reach (and penetrate) it — to at least in some cases, forcibly transporting them there and pushing them across. Apparently the Turkish border police has in some cases fired tear gas at the migrants to pressure them to attempt to breach the Greek border.

Around 300 migrants from Ankara’s Akyurt Repatriation Center were transported to the border against their will on Feb. 29, said Sad?k Onur Gelbal, the chair of the Ankara Bar Association’s Migrant Rights Center on March 4.

Idlib ceasefire: Putin & Erdogan reach deal on Syria de-escalation after marathon Moscow talks

The leaders of Russia and Turkey have agreed a ceasefire plan for Syria’s Idlib and security measures for the troops stationed there to prevent the escalation in the militant-infested province from spiraling into an all-out war.
The press statement followed hours-long talks in Moscow between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

During the talks, Putin and Erdogan agreed a document detailing a ceasefire in Idlib, starting from midnight on March 6.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Thank God, and thank "the adults in the room" on this issue, Russia's Lavrov and Putin.

And in pictures, the faces "do tell the story"; look at Putin, attempting NOT to grin from ear to ear, while Edrogan looks chagrined and pale.

This "military misadventure" in Syria has NOT gone down well in Turkey, particularly with the Turkish Parliament, the actions of which recently devolved as documented here:

Turkey Sends 1,000 Special Forces To EU Border To Prevent Migrant Return

Starting last week multiple journalists published proof that Turkish authorities were actively facilitating refugee and migrant movement toward EU borders after Erdogan began making good on his prior threat to 'open the gates' — angry over the unfolding Idlib crisis. This included footage of buses staged in Istanbul and other cities to take thousands to the land border with Greece.

And now Ankara is now openly saying it's implemented a policy of not only pushing migrants to the border, but ensuring they won't come back — even after Greece shut its border and has been seen using harsh tactics to keep people from entering in a heightened militarized response.

Turkish Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu announced Thursday the deployment of 1,000 special operations police officers to ensure migrants can't return.

Syria - Another Ceasefire In Idleb - Erdogan Loses On All Points

Erdogan wants Idleb but neither Syria nor Iran nor Russia will let him have it. President Putin will meet Erdogan during the coming days and will make sure that the point is understood.

“Immediate Cease-Fire Along Existing Lines” — Erdogan Gives Up His Failed Offensive

Throughout February Erdogan demanded the Syrian army stops its Idlib advances against al-Qaeda-held Idlib and falls back to its starting lines. Throughout February he threatened that if the Syrians did not do so his military would make them. Come the expiration of his February-end deadline he proved true to his threat to try and do so. Less than a week later he has admitted the battlefield defeat of his attempt. Far from forcing the Syrian army back, Erdogan in Moscow formally accepted that they’re not going anywhere and asked for a truce.

The cease-fire has been granted, but not entirely for free. Since the battlefield initiative remained (albeit only very slightly so) with the Syrian-Russian side, it was Erdogan who had to give up something for relief from further humiliation.

TURKISH FORCES ARE ON ‘TACTICAL RETREAT’. SYRIAN ARMY RECAPTURES MORE TERRITORY IN EASTERN AND SOUTHERN IDLIB

Erdogan’s forces continue their bloody battle for peace and prosperity for al-Qaeda groups in the Syrian region of Greater Idlib.

On March 3, Turkey shot down an L-39 warplane of the Syrian Air Force in eastern Idlib. The warplane, which was carrying out strikes on al-Qaeda militants, crashed near the town of Maarat al-Numan. One of the ejected pilots landed in the militant-held area and was killed. On the same day, Turkish media released videos showing drone strikes on the Syrian Army convoy supposedly moving near Maarat al-Numan and the destruction of an alleged Pantsir air defense system of the Syrian Air Defense Forces near Saraqib.

US: Turkey has 'full right to defend itself' in Syria

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo voiced unwavering support for Turkey in Syria on Thursday as Ankara seeks to thwart an Assad regime offensive in the country’s northwest, Anadolu Agency reports.

“We believe firmly that our NATO partner Turkey has the full right to defend itself against the risk that’s being created by what Assad, the Russians and the Iranians are doing inside of Syria,” Pompeo told reporters at the State Department.

“Hundreds of thousands of Syrians from all faiths, but predominantly Muslim, are being harmed by what the Assad regime, the Russians and the Iranians are doing inside of Idlib. The Turkish government has asked us for a handful of things. We’re evaluating all of those requests,” Pompeo said.

Empires of the Steppes Fuel Erdogan Khan’s DreamsAs Putin meeting looms, no one in Moscow believes any word, promise or cajoling from Erdogan anymore

“Idlib is mine”

So there is a link between the turcophone tribes of Central Asia from the 5th and 6thcenturies and the current Turkish nation. From the 6th to the 11th centuries they were set up as a confederation of big tribes. Then, going southwest, they founded states. Chinese sources document the first turkut (Turkish empires) as eastern Turks in Mongolia and western Turks in Turkestan.

They were followed by more or less ephemeral empires of the steppes such as the Uighurs in the 8th century (who, by the way, were originally Buddhists). It’s interesting that this original past of the Turks in Central Asia, before Islam, was somewhat elevated to mythic status by the Kemalists.

Turkish Army Posts in Syria’s Idlib Merge With Rebel Positions: Russia says Turkey is violating past deals on Idlib

Turkish-backed Islamist rebels in Northern Syria’s Idlib Province have been getting more and more aid from Turkey to fight against the Syrian government. They are looking for direct Turkish backing by embedding closer and closer to Turkish Army posts. At this point, they’ve effectively merged.

This makes sense for the rebels to do, because having Syria attack al-Qaeda doesn’t look like a problem, but having Syria attack the Turkish military does. Making it less clear which is which ensures that every Syrian military operation is vilified.

Russian officials were critical of this tactic, saying Turkey was violating obligations they’d established in previous deals over Idlib, particularly deals when all those Turkish Army posts were established. This was done specifically so Turkey didn’t do exactly what they’re doing.

Webmaster's Commentary:

How ever this is happening, it does not auger well for peace; for the Syrian people, and for its government.

HomeWorld NewsWATCH: Fistfight breaks out in Turkish parliament after lawmaker lashes out at Erdogan over Idlib soldier deaths

Turkey’s parliament descended into a chaotic fistfight after an opposition lawmaker accused President Recep Tayyip Erdo?an of disrespecting Turkish soldiers killed recently in Idlib, Syria.

During a closed session about the country’s operations in Idlib, opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) member Engin Ozkoc said Erdogan disrespected the dead troops and had also acted irresponsibly by sending them into conflict without air cover.

The accusations quickly escalated into a huge brawl inside the chamber between government and opposition politicians, with punches thrown and lawmakers slapping and kicking each other.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Were I a Turkish Parliamentarian, what would have really "chapped my grits" here, would have been that this was ordered by Edrogan, with absolutely zero parliamentary input or review, as to whether this military intervention in Syria was necessary, or was Edrogan writing checks (again)for his military misadventures in Syria, which his military were unable to cash.

That would have angered me greatly.

I do not know if Turkey's Constitution allows for snap elections, but were I a Turkish Parliamentarian, upset at his current geopolitical proclivities, I would want to see this happen, and right now.

Colorful images of Ambassador Kelly Craft enthusiastically shaking hands with ‘White Helmets’ members made rounds online, with users reminding the diplomat of their connections to a jihadi group the US once fought against.
Craft, who serves as the US Ambassador to the United Nations, showed up at the Turkey-Syrian border, posing with members of the self-described “civil defense group.” She didn’t come empty-handed, though, promising a hefty $108-million “humanitarian support package” intended for the people of northern Syria.

“Grateful to shake the hands of the brave men and women of the #whitehelmets,” Kelly tweeted, hailing them as “ordinary people doing extraordinary things to save the lives of Syrian victims of Assad’s brutality.”

Russia says Turkey trying to push 130,000 refugees from Syria into Greece - Interfax

Russia on Tuesday said that Turkey was trying to push 130,000 refugees from Syria into Greece, the Interfax news agency cited the Defence Ministry as saying.

The two thirds of these refugees - that Turkey is pushing from temporary camps in Syria - are Afghans, Iraqis and Africans, not Syrians, it added.

Assad Joins Forces With Libya’s Hafter to Combat Turkey: East Libya govt will open embassy in Damascus

While recent generations have shown them reluctant to expand far beyond their borders, in the past few months Turkey has shown interest in overseas military engagements. Forces have been active in northern Syria with an eye toward regime change, and Turkey has also committed to military involvement in Libya.

That’s given Turkey two potential enemies to worry about, and given them each a potential new ally. The Syrian government and Libya’s self-proclaimed Libyan National Army (LNA) or Gen. Khalifa Haftar have agreed to cooperation, and a memorandum of understanding to confront Turkish aggression.

The LNA’s adjoining government, the eastern-based Tobruk Parliament, has confirmed it will be opening an embassy in Damascus. This will be the first Libyan embassy in Syria since the 2012 NATO-imposed regime change in Libya.

Webmaster's Commentary:

This is one of the most significant developments regarding Libya, that you will almost never hear about, courtesy of the Corporate Presstitutes.

A very very curious, but astute, article appeared in mid-January of this year, from fp, and titled: Russia’s Role in the Libyan Civil War Gives It Leverage Over Europe

It then states that "recent joint Russian-Turkish summit in Moscow aimed at forging a cease-fire in Libya broke down after the Libyan warlord Khalifa Haftar left without signing the proposed truce agreement. One of Haftar’s main backers is Russia, and his unwillingness to sign on to the deal raises important questions about not only the degree of influence Russia actually has in Libya, but also how serious it is about bringing an end to the conflict.

Russia first rose to prominence in Libya in September 2019 after it deployed mercenaries to the front lines of Tripoli to back Haftar, sparking concern in the United States and Europe that the Kremlin had finally thrown its hat into Libya’s civil war. Its presence in Libya was strikingly reminiscent of the decisive role it played in Syria, where it backed the regime of President Bashar al-Assad to brutal effect and essentially saved the regime from collapse."

but if Syria (and Russia) are bringing force to bear against the current UN/proxy military government in Tripoli, which Erdogan is claiming he is fighting to defend, we have a couple of potential outcomes, both lousy, for US involvement here.

The first is a triumphant Haftar, after taking Tripoli, and the rest of the country, calling for new elections, and throwing the delegitimized UN government out, and the question has to be asked; what is the US government actually willing to do to prevent this, in light of the fact that Russia is siding with Haftar?!?

The second is a prolonged US/NATO-led military against Haftar and the Russians, which could well turn Libya into another US Vietnam, with the same ultimate outcome as this war had.

And what concerns me, is that those in the Bowels of Power in this country appear to be sleepwalking into this trap, just as blissfully as did the US government in World War I.

One of the most brilliant films about war ever to have been made, is the 2nd Robert Downey Jr./Jude Law film about Sherlock Holmes; the title is "A Game of Shadows", and if you have not seen it, I urge you to do so, because it talks in very plain language, about just how regional wars like this get fanned, until they become world wars; this is the potential impact of Al Assad throwing his geopolitical fortunes with Russia, in supporting Haftar in Libya.

Erdogan’s Dance of Death With NATO

Although the evidence is murky, it appears that both Russian and Syrian jet fighters took part in the Feb. 27 attack on a Turkish mechanized infantry battalion consisting of roughly 400 soldiers. According to an account in Al-Monitor, two Syrian Sukhoi SU-22 pounded the convoy, forcing the troops to take cover. But then a pair of Russian Sukhoi SU-34s dropped advanced laser-guided bunker-buster bombs on two roadside buildings where Turkish forces had taken shelter, burying them in the rubble.

Webmaster's Commentary:

And the US government has responded accordingly, according to an article in msn.com, datelined today:U.S. promises Turkey ammunition for Syria's Idlib battle

The article goes on to state:

U.S. promises Turkey ammunition for Syria's Idlib battle

The United States is willing to give NATO ally Turkey ammunition alongside humanitarian assistance in northwestern Syria where Ankara is in a deepening standoff with Russia, the U.S. special representative for the region said on Tuesday. Lucy Fielder reports."

As I have mentioned on this site many times before, just because something is the most ham-fistedly, pig-headedly stupid thing the US government can do, is no guarantee that it will not do it; I am very concerned that President Trump may well rue the day he and his Cabinet decided that this was the "right way" of handling Erdogan's "military misadventures" in Syria.

Will Idlib be Putin’s Folly or Erdogan’s Rubicon?

It’s been a dramatic few days in Syria. The Syrian Army pushed across Idlib Province to retake major strongholds of Al-Qaeda-linked jihadists who have controlled the region for years thanks to support from Turkey.

This provoked a major escalation from Turkey’s president Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Major offensives by the jihadists, backed by Turkish armor and air power, pushed back the Syrian army from the outskirts of Idlib city and took back the town of Saraqib at the confluence of the M4 and M5 highways which are of major strategic importance.

Erdogan warns Europe to expect ‘millions’ of migrants after Turkey opens borders

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan warned on Monday that "millions" of migrants would soon head for Europe, drawing accusations from EU leaders that he is trying to pressure them into backing his incursions into Syria.

Turkey gave the green light to refugees and migrants on Friday to leave for the European Union and thousands have since massed at the Greek border, triggering fears of an influx like that which poisoned European politics in 2015.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel described Turkey's move as "unacceptable" and EU migration commissioner Margaritis Schinas said nobody could "blackmail or intimidate the EU".

But Turkey, which hosts roughly four million refugees, is trying to hold off another mass influx from Syria – where government forces backed by Russian air power are advancing into the last rebel stronghold of Idlib.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Europe is singularly unprepared for this flood of immigrants, and has no cohesive way to stop them, save assassination at the borders, which is hardly likely.

But the real problem here, is the reality that Russia and Turkey are closer to war over Syria, than they have ever been before; ad US and European/NATO fire-power to the mix, and we have a recipe for disaster.

As NATO is a partner with Turkey, this makes the possibility of an intense US/NATO incursion into Syria, a lot more real than it has been before.
And we also have a companion piece, also from antiwar.com, with the following headline: Threat of a US and Russian Nuclear War Is Now at Its Greatest Since 1983
The article goes on to state: "When the Commander of NATO says he is a fan of flexible first strike at the same time that NATO is flexing its military muscle on Russia’s border, the risk of inadvertent nuclear war is real.

US Air Force Gen. Tod D. Wolters told the Senate this week he “is a fan of flexible first strike” regarding NATO’s nuclear weapons, thereby exposing the fatal fallacy of the alliance’s embrace of American nuclear deterrence policy.

It was one of the most remarkable yet underreported exchanges in recent Senate history. Earlier this week, during the testimony before the Senate Armed Services Committee of General Tod Wolters, the commander of US European Command and, concurrently, as the Supreme Allied Commander in Europe (SACEUR) also the military head of all NATO armed forces, General Wolters engaged in a short yet informative exchange with Senator Deb Fischer, a Republican from the state of Nebraska.

Following some initial questions and answers focused on the alignment of NATO’s military strategy with the 2018 National Defense Strategy of the US, which codified what Wolters called “the malign influence on behalf of Russia” toward European security, Senator Fischer asked about the growing recognition on the part of NATO of the important role of US nuclear deterrence in keeping the peace. “We all understand that our deterrent, the TRIAD, is the bedrock of the security of this country,” Fischer noted. “Can you tell us about what you are hearing…from our NATO partners about this deterrent?”

Wolters responded by linking the deterrence provided to Europe by the US nuclear TRIAD with the peace enjoyed on the European continent over the past seven decades. Fischer asked if the US nuclear umbrella was “vital in the freedom of NATO members”; Wolters agreed. Remarkably, Wolters linked the role of nuclear deterrence with the NATO missions in Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere outside the European continent. NATO’s mission, he said, was to “proliferate deterrence to the max extent practical to achieve greater peace.”

Then came the piece de resistance of the hearing. “What are your views, Sir,” Senator Fischer asked, “of adopting a so-called no-first-use policy. Do you believe that that would strengthen deterrence?”

General Wolters’ response was straight to the point. “Senator, I’m a fan of flexible first-use policy.”

I don't know if that statement scares any one of you as much as it does me, but right now, my hair is standing straight up in the back... and breakdancing,

Turkey in Syria: Down a Blind Alley in an Unwinnable War?

Turkish Forces Will Leave Syria – One Way or Another

Turkish troops will not be able to remain indefinitely in Syria. Their proxies will eventually be liquidated and the positions of Turkish forces surrounded by Syrian forces. In many areas of Idlib this is already the case. Additional Turkish troops and supplies fed into losing battles and what is ultimately a lost war will only delay the inevitable undoing of Turkish interests in Syria.

Ankara could – on the other hand – begin aligning its policies with the reality of what is happening in Idlib and expand its cooperation with Russia and Iran regarding the Syrian conflict – incrementally withdrawing support from militant groups, encouraging them to disarm and surrender, and gradually handing over Turkish positions within Syria to the actual military, government, and people of Syria.

In his first public comments since Thursday's deaths of 33 Turkish troops in Idlib, likely by a Russian airstrike (though Ankara has preferred to blame Syrian forces), Erdogan said this number will likely climb to as many as 30,000 on Saturday.

In Call With Erdogan, Trump Backs Turkey on Syria

President Trump had a call with Turkey’s President Erdogan on Friday, and according to White House officials, Trump backed Turkey absolutely in Syria, demanding Syria and Russia immediately halt their offensive in Idlib Province.

The White House comments again presented Turkey’s operations as trying to “de-escalate the situation in northwest Syria,” when it would be more correct to say they are trying to keep Islamist groups from being defeated outright by the Syrian government.

Russia Deploys Elite ‘Hellduck’ Bombers for Strikes on Jihadists as Clashes in Idlib Escalate

The Russians have deployed several warships carrying Kaliber Cruise Missiles off the coast of Syria the past couple of days and these planes too.

Amid escalating clashes in Syria’s Idlib province, which have seen Turkey providing considerable armaments and direct fire support to a range of jihadist militias on the ground, the Russian Air Force has deployed its elite Su-34 ‘Hellduck’ strike fighters for attacks on militant positions.

Turkey is set to invade Syria along a 900 km front.

A Syrian friend is telling us that his sources in Syria are telling him that Turkey is preparing to invade Syria along it entire border at various points. The Russian and entire Syrian military are on high alert. Unless somebody dissuades Erdogan all hell may break loose. 2 days ago the Russians moved several surface warships near Syria and the are carrying scores of Kaliber missiles. Things are gonna get ugly. Got my ear to the ground. I hope the Russians talk him out of it.

Turkey Asks NATO to Join Its War Against Syria and Russia

Note: The events that led to this critical impasse were reported by me last night, and that report thus continues here, in order to provide context to these events.

The spokesperson for the Islamist party of Turkey’s President Tayyip Erdogan has called upon all of NATO to go to war against Syria for Syria’s having killed dozens of Turkey’s troops in order for Syria to defeat Turkey’s invasion and military occupation of Syria’s Idlib Province, which borders on Turkey. Going to war against Syria would mean going to war also against Russia, which is in Syria to protect Syria’s sovereignty over its own territory. If the United States accepts that Turkish proposal, then World War III will consequently result.

SYRIA - DEADLY BOMB STRIKE WARNS TURKEY TO END ITS ESCAPADES

SOURCE: MOON OF ALABAMA
The last three days of the Idleb campaign were quite eventful.

The Turkey supported Jihadis threw everything they had against Saraqib where the M4 and M5 highways join. This enabled the Syrian army to take some 40 towns and cities at the southern front. The whole Ghab plain is now in liberated and the frontline has been massively shortened.

Saraqib fell to the Jihadis but they paid a very bloody price for it as the Syrian and Russian air force continued to intensively bomb the approaches to the city. A new defensive line has now been established around Saraqib and the Syrian army is preparing to recover it.

To take the large area in the south in difficult terrain and against little resistance was more important than the temporary loss of Saraqib.

Webmaster's Commentary:

I would like to hope and pray that someone besides Erdogan, in Ankara, is reading the tea leaves here, and understands - fully - what has to happen, which is a total and complete withdrawal of Turkish troops from Syria, and as immediately as humanly possible.

Angering Russia in this way was one of the most ham-fistedly, pig-headedly stupid things Erdogan could have done here, to the point where Moscow believed that the only remedy for Turkey's aggression, was a retaliation of this magnitude.

I would like to hope (and pray) that Edrogan is capable of learning from his mistakes, but am unsure how this will translate into Turkey's future policy on Syria and Russia.
