"The executive power in our government is not the only, perhaps not even the principal, object of my solicitude. The tyranny of the legislature is really the danger most to be feared, and will continue to be so for many years to come. The tyranny of the executive power will come in its turn, but at a more distant period." -- Thomas Jefferson, Democracy in America

Unauthorized websites distributing trojanized versions of cracked software have been found to infect Apple macOS users with a new Trojan-Proxy malware.

"Attackers can use this type of malware to gain money by building a proxy server network or to perform criminal acts on behalf of the victim: to launch attacks on websites, companies and individuals, buy guns, drugs, and other illicit goods," Kaspersky security researcher Sergey Puzan said.

The Russian cybersecurity firm said it found evidence indicating that the malware is a cross-platform threat, owing to artifacts unearthed for Windows and Android that piggybacked on pirated tools.

Google has released an updated version of the Google Drive app for Windows and macOS that, along with some simple manual work, should resolve missing file issues.

A help page was published by Google yesterday that includes steps to resolve issues with missing files for "the small subset" of Drive for desktop users it said were experiencing the glitch. Per the company, affected users should install the latest version of Drive for desktop, which should be version 85.0.13.0 or newer.

Once installed, Google said users should run the app, click the Drive for desktop button in their menu bar or system tray, and while holding the Shift key, they should click Settings, where "Recover from backups" should appear. Click that to start the recovery process.

A series of attacks against Microsoft Active Directory domains could allow miscreants to spoof DNS records, compromise Active Directory and steal all the secrets it stores, according to Akamai security researchers.

We're told the attacks - which are usable against servers running the default configuration of Microsoft Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) servers - don't require any credentials.

Akamai says it reported the issues to Redmond, which isn't planning to fix the issue. Microsoft did not respond to The Register's inquiries.

The good news, according to Akamai, is that it hasn’t yet seen a server under this type of attack. The bad news: the firm’s flaw finders also told us that massive numbers of organizations are likely vulnerable, considering 40 percent of the "thousands" of networks that Akamai monitors are running Microsoft DHCP in the vulnerable configuration.

The Hubble Space Telescope is expected to resume science operations on Friday, after a gyroscope glitch forced NASA to suspend astronomical observations for weeks.

"After analyzing the data, the team has determined science operations can resume under three-gyro control," the US space agency confirmed in its latest update. "Based on the performance observed during the tests, the team has decided to operate the gyros in a higher-precision mode during science observations. Hubble's instruments and the observatory itself remain stable and in good health."

A lawyer who helps individuals recoup lost savings after being victimized by cybercrimes, Marc Maisch, warned in a recent interview with the German Die Welt newspaper that a major crime wave is on the horizon in which clever cybercriminals could scam millions of people out of their money with help from AI tools.

He explained: “AI is a great tool, but of course cybercriminals also use it to create phishing emails in order to have ChatGPT write malicious code that can be used immediately. And we haven’t yet talked about deepfakes and voice phishing, i.e., faces and voices are recreated.”

AI voice cloning scams are one concern that has been on the rise lately, with new technology enabling thieves to clone the voices of people they are targeting on social media so they can create fake calls in which they contact the victim's friends or family, impersonating the victim and claiming they are in danger and need money or access to sensitive information right away.

Several new studies out of Korea reveal that people who get vaccinated are much more prone than the unvaccinated to develop serious health conditions like ear disease and blood disorders.

Researchers looked at data from the Korean National Health Insurance Service to compared health outcomes between vaccinated and unvaccinated people. Pretty much across the board, vaccinated people are much sicker than unvaccinated people.

In one of the studies they looked at, researchers discovered that rates of 13 different immune-related non-fatal adverse events (irAEs) are notably higher among the vaccinated compared to the unvaccinated. These non-fatal problems include menstrual disorder, bruising, tinnitus, inner ear disease and other forms of ear disease.

Footage shared by Israeli media appears to show Israel Defence Forces (IDF) troops rounding up scores of men and transporting them on the back of trucks.

The men are believed to have surrendered in the Jabalia refugee camp and other areas around northern Gaza, with Israeli outlet Walla saying they were stripped 'to rule out the possibility that they were carrying weapons'.

Dozens of captives are reported to have been paraded through Palestine Square in Gaza City, with shoes and sandals strewn across the street in one image.

When asked about the images, IDF spokesman Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari seemed to confirm that the men had been taken prisoner but did not clarify whether those pictured were members of Hamas or civilians.
